Well that's an easy fix. Apple will have to change the hardware to an extent anyways because of the different signal type. All they have to do is change the case and call the phone something slightly different. Voila! It's a new piece of hardware and therefore doesn't fall under the 'exclusive' iPhone contract. That is, unless the contract somehow states any device capable of making phone calls, that is manufactured by Apple - which sounds like something ATT would do

at&t actually does have the fastest network see link
CW: AT&T's 3G Network Leaves Verizon, Sprint in the Dust || The iPod Observer - Now Playing

also aside from being faster at&t has the only 3G network that allows you to use the internet and be on a phone call at the same time. which comes in handy a lot when im talking to someone and watching live updates of a baseball game. if at&t doesn't have coverage where you are i think you can technically terminate your contract without an ETF. call them an complain and tell them you contacted the BBB or something.

Thank god Verizon passed the first time. Id just now be getting a really good phone to use with TMobile. Im so happy with TMobile, they have been outstanding, and even used to bend the rules when I bought the latest and greatest blackberry every 9 months. Normally you'd have to wait at least 11-13 months before you got a discount on newer phones within your contract time, but not them. Now I qualify for more discounts, because ive been on my iPhone for so long, I hadnt purchased a phone in a while with them. Rarely does the customer win in the Cell Phone game, but thanks to the iPhone this one has

Uggh just unlock it already and let any carrier who adapts use it. You dont have to retail it in cell companies' stores, a simple Apple Kiosk and service center will do, where a full blown store would cost too much money per average sales in a smaller demographic. Talk about units sold.......

by the way: I know what Im saying is a little childish and wishful thinking, but why not?

Great article though thanks!!!

Reminds me of one of Apple's many arguments against PCs/for Macs: Macs just work because the same people that design the software design the hardware, unlike PCs; Microsoft makes the software, Dell/Gateway/eMachines/Compaq/whatever make the hardware, so what can loosely be called "compatibility" is faulty at best.

I'm seeing the ads right now...

I still doubt Verizon will get iPhones. When I got my LG Voyager, the guy at Verizon said that Apple is too controlling to work with. Notice how you have to go to the Apple store to get the iPhone? And how you have to bring you iPhone to Apple for technical support? Verizon was offered to carry the iPhone, but Apple was too controlling, so they turned it down.

Does anyone know if the 3G iphone is compatible with T-Mobile's 3G network? I've read elsewhere that it isn't, but I haven't tested it personally.

mastuul, many are saying that it's not possible and others are saying it is, some say that you can use tmobile 3g for downlink and edge for uplink but I think these are just theories

Thanx button in advanced

Um, or you could go to any ATT store, or Best Buy...
And of course you talk to apple for tech support, it's their hardware. ATT wouldn't have a clue how to fix it.

No, it's not compatible, most unlock SIMs have disclaimers that will tell you that you have to disable 3G for the phone to work correctly on T Mobile.

yes. the reason apple was hiring cdma/evdo people was for macbooks and whatever tablet/netbook apple is said to be working on with 3G capabilities. sprint and verizon will never see the iPhone. cdma is a technology that is rarely used in the world. the us, canada, and 1 or 2 other countries use it. the rest of the world uses GSM (sim cards). AT&T has an exclusivity that will probably be revamped every few years.

apple will continue going with att because its familiar ground now being that theyre going on 3+ years of being bedfellows. switching to a different network just doesnt seem plausible or smart. att will do anything to keep a cash cow like the iPhone in its corner. i wouldnt doubt if the iPhone stayed with att forever.

*tmobile is a blessing when it comes to the iPhone. cheaper than att and great customer service. the warranty comes from apple so its not like im missing out on something bypassing att, and the only lacking features are 3G (which drains the battery anyway) and visual voicemail (not a deal breaker). tmobile doesnt even care if you tether! i know its been said tons of times, but if you want an iPhone-sign up for tmobile, get a cheap data plan, get a free phone, sell it, put the cash made toward an unlocked iPhone, get applecare, and be happy you arent a slave to att's ridiculous prices.
