Unlocked iPhone 3G released secretly in Hong Kong!

According to a report at MacNN, Apple Stores in Hong Kong are now selling the unlocked iPhone 3G in Hong Kong.

Though there were no prior announcements (unlike apple) but the 8GB model is announced for 5,400 HKD and 16GB model is announced for 6,200 HKD

The Hong Kong online store mentions:

iPhone 3G purchased at the Apple Online Store can be activated with any wireless carrier. Simply insert the SIM from your current phone into iPhone 3G and connect to iTunes 8 to complete activation

This is weird as they mention any carrier but Apple has fixed carriers in every country! So, this makes us believe that this one is definitely unlocked.

Maybe this is a surprise which Apple planned for Hong Kong citizens or just a mischievous act done by an employee. So, let's just wait for the official announcement.

Based on the currency exchange, the price seems right for an unlocked iPhone.

8GB iPhone 3G: HK$ 5400 = approx US$ 700
16GB iPhone 3G: HK$ 6200 = approx US$ 800

US$ 1 = HK$ 7.77

I've got a friend that bought a phone off of eBay for $1000. It was from Italy and it was exactly as this phone is described. I was very skeptical about the phone until he got it in the mail. He took the phone out of the box, put his T-mobile sims card in the phone and it activated. He's since updated to all the different firmwares with no problems at all. He's currently running 2.1 with a T-mobile sim card on a white 16gb iPhone.

The phone is directly from Apple in Italy. I've got a white 16gb 3G on AT&T and the phones look exactly the same. The box had little minor differences. Believe me I called him an idiot for buying anything on eBay for $1000 especially a phone that seems to be unlockable. But it truelly and honestly works. I jailbroke the phone myself since I have a mac and he is too impatient to wait on anything. Which is why he paid $1000 for a phone on eBay instead of waiting on dev team to finish their miracles.

It costs $1156.38 NZ dollars or 796.96 US dollars

It's the same here in Singapore. We can now go to the only carrier here to buy a unlock 3G iphone for approx. SGD$1300 off the counter.

I tried to purchase it and have it shipped to the US, but they only ship to HK. Is there a way to have it shipped to the US?
