yes, 2d bar codes / data matrix codes / qr codes are not new, they have been in popular use for years. UPS has been using them for an even longer time, just take a look at any shipping label and you can usually find one. The most likely reason for the code is to identify the part number of the back panel, or the manufacturing date.

as stated before it is obviously clear that it is a code to help google and apple achieve world domination. clearly.

or just a code to identify components + assembly date etc.

Our iPhone's are probably bugged. The FBI likes to know everything, so it's probably a way to listen in on convo's and get satellite imagery and location.
