Actually I was just comparing a friends 2G side by side with my 3G today, and I happened to notice that the 2G had more info on the back, including the serial number and the IMEI number (both of which are absent on the 3G). So maybe they simply moved the serial number to this 'hidden' barcode on the inside o the case.

Also, I noticed they moved the square with the capacity (4GB, 8GB, 16GB) to be directly under the 'iPhone' whereas on the 2G the IMEI #, etc. was in between the 'iPhone' and the capacity.

Probably meaningless, but I thought it might be worth mentioning.

Oh, and can anyone confirm whether it is actually a QR code, or just a standard data matrix code? I believe QR codes are a special variation invented by google, so perhaps this means Apple has some connection? *gasp* world domination is imminent!!

It looks like a 2D barcode for me.

Possible use is to track the transport of the back panels. Or just the lot number, serial number, IMEI or all of that in one barcode.

I have not taken mine apart yet but as soon as I look at it, should be able to check what it is.

ur, guys, I just read the matrix with my Japanese cellphone's barcode scanner, and well, usually on japan you get URLs out of it, but this time I got this:

    12345678

    Scam...?

I am guessing that a blacklight might work. This is probably just an authentication deal...

It's a 3D barcode. The Japanese use them a lot.

If anyone has got a Nokia handset with the 3D barcode app installed they would be able to confirm what Albior said.

On a black 3g iphone: Take sand paper and rub it on the back of phone 1 1/4" below the camera lens and you will see the 3d barcode.

On a white 3g iphone: Take sand paper and rub it on the back of phone 1 1/2" below the camera lens and you will see the 3d barcode.

This will result in the destruction of the back of your phone.

From working in a plastics manufacturing & assembly plant, I'd assume that the barcode is nothing more than:

    1. Identifier to when the phone was assembled
    2. Identifier to when the plastic backing was molded.

    Default um
Okay, well someone must be lying or wrong somewhere.

I just did the nightvision thing with my video camera, and i could see through the back panel clearly, but all i saw was the plastic underneath. I looked everywhere, and saw the screws, but no matrix.

I was #2 in line to get the 3g, so maybe they didn't put them on until recently.

The most popular application for Data Matrix is marking small items, due to the code’s ability to encode fifty characters in a symbol that is readable at 2 or 3 mm2 and the fact that the code can be read with only a 20% contrast ratio.
The Electronic Industries Alliance (EIA) recommends using Data Matrix for labeling small electronic components.
Data Matrix codes are part of a new traceability drive in many industries, particularly aerospace where quality control is tight and a black market exists for counterfeit or non-serviceable parts. Data Matrix codes (and accompanying alpha-numeric data) identify details of the component, including manufacturer ID, part number and a unique serial number.
