My suggestion to BigBoss, Saurik and all those other excellent devs who have created very useful apps for the Iphone.

Make all apps that you develop support two modes of operation:-

a) If ads are enabled on the IPhone allow the app to run for free. On the other hand if ads are disabled show the error message that this app cannot run with ads disabled like some apps do and exit.

b) If the owner pays a reasonable license fee for the app then disable the ads. So those who contribute to the devs would get an ad free experience.


That should keep devs and users happy except for those freeloaders who feel entitled to get everything for free and i doubt you can make them happy while earning a living.

It would in my opinion be a better model than the Appstore model where you cannot try an app to see if its worth the money before you have to pay for it.

The problem with that is that cracked version of jailbroken apps will start popping up. Hell cycorder is available without ads now via crack.

the only problem i'm having with this is cydia isn't updating anymore. the last changes where from september 24th! I removed admob, im not sure if google is the problem, and i hope it isnt because i hate google ads

it seems this thread is dead. its been a while since my post and i was actually coming back here looking for a modified hosts file because i had upgraded to 2.2 and the ads in safari are killing my edge speeds. i read through this whole thread and wow, crazy, just crazy. i'd just like to say i still think bigboss, saurik, and the repo hosts have ads because they need them there to have a source of revenue to keep making great apps.

on a side note, i didn't know why cydia had stopped updating itself a while ago for me, i just reinstalled cydia and it fixed the problem... im guessing the reinstall replaced my modified hosts file?

anyway, i'd like to make a simple request to saurik, bigboss, and any cydia repo hosts:
can you compile a list of ad servers not to block so we can have some ad blocking in safari? this seems to me to be a sensible solution, have you (the developers and repo hosts) create your own modified hosts file that does not hurt your revenue in any way.

if this request still has implications for your revenue, then... i take it back? ha i can't remember the correct word, but yes, if it still implicates revenue, i don't mind having to deal with ads

andd to finish to this off, i'd just like to say thanks to bigboss, saurik, and all cydia developers and hosts (including you ste ) for all your hard work, as someone mentioned, most people here just like to ask and complain about things but never seem able to say a simple thing : thank you

Please do go back to your old job. How much money are you making on this anyway? The sooner you and BigBoss stop developing, the sooner we will get others to fill the void who will make apps without ads. I use Linux and there so many more packages available for free than on Cydia that have no ads at all. I do not even know of an ad-supported package available from my Linux distribution's repository. One day that will be the case with the iPhone jailbreak apps when there will be more choices and we will not have to put up with annoying ad-supported jailbreak apps. You stopping development would hasten this.
