So i restored it to the original apple 2.0.2 firmware and of course it was locked on at-t.

Then i created a custom firmware again, usin winpwn in expert mode, i did not use quickpwn...

After the custom firmware was created winpwn crashed, with the usual send or dont send error report message, however the custom firware was in my documents folder.

Until this point my iphone was left hooked on to the usb and the screen was completly white, like i turned on the flashlight app if you know what i mean.

So i started itunes 8.0 and simply tried to upload the custom firmware and a couple of minutes later it was pwned, and unlocked, with cydia and installer on it and of course appstore.

I dunno what i did right or wrong i just tried it out and it works perfectly, youtube works, edge works, wifi works, calender, all my contacts and album coovers were restored, everything was on it like when i had my 1.1.4. firmware, nothing was lost.

the same exact thing happen to me and I just did the custom restore though itunes 8.0 with the iphone in the white screen and it worked prefectly just as you stated

Everything seems to be ok here in dallas with the folks I know. I havent upgraded yet, but from what I see around here it's ok. I was going to upgrade iTunes and the New firmware all at once when pwnage comes out for 2.1. But that genius feature is sweet

Judt delete one file and create a new custom .ipsf file with PwnTool.

I've lost count of how many times I have restored my 3G and Original iPhone I too enjoy SSH'ing and playing with themes and putting my own together. But I wanted to check out the 'Genius' feature...only to find out my 'Genius' is actually a moron, but i like looking at all of the album artwork in a grid style view so I guess it was worth it.

What I'd really like though is support for the volume buttons on the new Apple headphones, then I may invest in a set

Last night I was debating wether or not to upgrade to iTunes 8 because I was unsure if I can install custom firmwares still, guess I shouldnt have done it. Im going to jailbreak a 3G iPhone is a few hours and I will try the iTunes 8 and Error 1600 while restoring: Solution! | TwiPhone.com link that applestar posted if I run into any errors.

I just uninstalled iTunes8, MobileDeviceServices and the updater. After a restart and then re-installing iTunes8, I was able to use my custom jailbreak with my 3G in DFU mode.

I did try to create a new .ipsw, but winpwn 2.5 crashed on the last step as it was preparing my 3G for pwnage. I did not try to use this file for my jailbreak. I used an older file I had previously done.

However, I did get the same results as reported above by mugz5 and brainless83.

It is possible to pwn, but it looks like it is only on a case by case basis depending on hardware configuation and OS. Hopefully it won't take much to correct the issues caused by iTunes8

I am confused, I have a 2g jailbroke iphone and if what I am hearing is correct I will lose the jailbreak if I update to the 2.1 and use itunes 8.0 when they both come out? I do not need the unlock as I am on at&t anyway. I have not heard what the 2.1 firmware brings as far as updates or if it is even worth updating.

Nobody really knows what 2.1 will bring but it sounds like a lot of bug fixes and is probably going to be worth updating to. However, if you update to 2.1 immediately it will not be jailbroken anymore. You need to wait for the dev's to release the jailbreak tool.

neww here! (windows xp) i upgraded to itunes 8 and then tried to pwn my phone. lost everything after full restore. when i tried to pwn w/ itunes 8 i would get an error say that "winpwn 2.5 has to close". work on that all day yesterday. today after full restore i decided to try again. when i got to the windows error message (after i done went through the hold down power button, hold power and home, release power, then contratulations now accepting ipsw (this is when i get the windows error), i just kept holding the home button while starting itunes 8. when itunes launched i got a message from itunes that said something to the effect of "iphone in restore mode". when i got this message i let go of the home button then pressed shift on the keyboard while pressing restore in itunes. a windows box appeared where i directed to the ipsw that winpwn created. work fine...cydia and installer and itunes recognizes my iphone.
i suggest backing up u'r phone outlook or something similar to restore contacts and etc after jailbreak

hope this helps

iphone 8gb 3g 2.02 by the way

everyday it seems that a "one-click" jailbreak/activate/unlock solution becomes more and more of a pipe dream.
this phone is WAY to complex and advanced to be as simple as a one click solution.
there are currently 3 different versions of the iphone (1st gen 3.9bl, 1st gen 4.6bl, and now 3G) that alone requires more than a one-click.
then when you account for:
1. is it OTB,
2. is it stock or unlocked,
3. has it EVER been ziphoned,
4. what firmware is it on,
5. what firmware do you want it to be on,
6. what itunes do you have,
7. bootneutered or gunlockd,
8. are u legit at&t or tmobile,
9. using it in US or overseas.

all of these factors require a slightly different process for the j/a/u.
i do about one iphone a day off of a craigslist add.
since i posted the ad in january, i have j/a/u about 140 iphones.
each one has had a slightly different process each time.
i won't even get into the time and options it took to downgrade from 2.0 to 1.1.4

i hope this puts a stop to all the questions about when a "ziphone style one-click idiot proof" program will become available.
even tho, i know it will never end.

UPDATE:

I just tried to re-jailbreak again, and I recieved the 1600 error. This time I just tried to reload the previous custom firmware that I created earlier.

I created a new version of the custom firmware and winpwn crashed on me again with the white screen. Once I opened iTunes 8, I was able to load the custom firmware with no more error. Everything works on the phone after that.
