This is great news! This app is the only reason I have stayed with 1.1.4. When MMS comes to 2.x, then I will upgrade.

I'm not sure about AT&T but the MMS service is simply added on to the sim card like GPRS or video (with a tick in a box) ... reason I know this that I work for Vodafone, my contract however is with O2 here in the UK... I'll be kicking *** if I find out MMS was never enabled on mine.... why not tell them you need to use MMS on another phone and just get it enabled that way?
Every new sim card sold by Vodafone comes with ability to add
voicemail.
VF e-mail
video conferencing
MMS
SMS
GPRS
So there is really no excuse... you will however need to find out the mms settings for your telecom however e.g
Vodafone MMS settings
Access Point Name: wap.vodafone.co.uk
Username: wap
Password: wap
Authentication: Normal
Data bearer: GPRS
Gateway IP (proxy) address: 212.183.137.012
Session mode: Permanent
MMS Message (Relay) Server URL: http://mms.vodafone.co.uk/servlets/mms/
OR
o2 MMS settings
The o2 MMS settings can be sent direct to your mobile. Go to O2 Mobile Phone Settings. Alternatively, the settings are:
Access point name: wap.o2.co.uk (contract customers) or payandgo.o2.co.uk (pay-as-you-go customers)
Username: o2wap (contract customers) or payandgo (pay-as-you-go customers)
Password: password
Authentication: Normal
Data bearer: GPRS
Gateway IP (proxy) address: 193.113.200.195
Session mode: Permanent
Port number: 8080 or 9201
URL address: http://mmsc.mms.o2.co.uk:8002
OR just check here for the uk

It's not as simple to get AT&T to put the MMS plan on the iPhone as people are pointing out. You will have to tell AT&T that you have another phone (not the iPhone), provide them with an IMEI of another AT&T phone, and get a plan that will allow for MMS. It won't cost any extra, I believe, since you are just switching out the iPhone's SMS/data plan for a non-iPhone SMS/data plan. Since it's not an iPhone plan, you will lose the ability to receive visual voicemail. This workaround works, but it is far from acceptable. I ended up giving up since I don't send or receive many MMS messages, and I would rather have visual voicemail! Apple and AT&T need to open their eyes and just permit MMS on this phone, since people will use up more SMS/MMS messages and provide AT&T with additional profits! I believe that Apple is withholding this so that they can present it later on, and it's truly annoying! You can go here (SwirlyMMS's site to get answers): SwirlySpace.com • Index page .

It is not a plan.. its a fricking service.
free weekends is a plan... stop the clock is a plan
GPRS is a sim service
MMS is a sim service
voicemail is a fricking service!
visual voicemail otoh may be part of your plan but if you share 2 phones with one sim card (my xdaII and iphone) there should be no reason why they cant just add on the bloody service.
If that's the way they want to play it I'll unlock mine just to put a competitors PAYT MMS enabled sim in just for mms
Edit:
Just read the edit .... so they actively de-activeate it .... I'm so suddenly beginning to hate apple/ATT .... I'll need to dig around to find out if it's the same with O2/ other carriers but that is just total ******** - I wonder what their motive is? I can send a picture in an e-mail for free on wifi... or I can get charged 36p a txt on mms ... go figure?Last edited by Nossie; 09-02-2008 at 11:28 AM.

I am still amazed that this issue still hasn't been dealt with by Apple. The 2 features of Video recording and MMS are 2 basic functionalities of most phones in todays market. Yet the appointed GOD of phones cant do either.

I hope someone helps us fully understand what to expect with AT&T and how to make 3G iphones work if we even can. People are saying it will and it wont, so I'm not sure.
I just posted here:

This sounded like a good work around until I read the part about losing visual voice mail. (lame)
If that's the case, hopefully the other visual voice mail options will have a better iphone app in the near future. I used to use youmail with my treo until I got my iphone. I like the custom greetings based on caller ID etc. I might switch back if they released an actual iphone app. I guess the web version isnt too bad, they formated it pretty well for iphone and you can just create a home screen shortcut.

I don't know about sending, but you can receive video. My GF sent me a video she took on her LG Voyager and I got it on my phone. I'm pretty sure you can send though. I tried sending one on my phone but I couldn't remember where IVR stored videos so I gave up. SwirlyMMS, FileBrowser, and Agile Messenger are the last three apps I need ported to 2.x and I'll be happy
