iPhone 3G Reception "Completely Normal!"
Recently there had been many problems regarding the iPhone 3G reception and speed issues (even leading to lawsuits). But, according to tests conducted by some geeky Swedes, they were able to prove that the iPhone's 3G reception is "completely normal".

They compared the iPhone against a P1 and N73. Though P1 was proved better in receiving signals and N73 in sending signals, the iPhone was left behind just by a 'negligible amount'.
The equipment used to test the device were the once used by FCC. Remember that the results of test are completely based on hardware and not software so we can always keep a small margin.

Agreed.
I counted 4 dropped calls yesterday alone - I actually had one call dropped twice! And it was only a 15 min conversation. I blame AT&T wholeheartedly, because all of the issues I've ever had, including not receiving calls, but having a voicemail pop up out of the blue, consistent dropped calls, always having notably less signal than any of my friends on other networks, receiving voicemail hours, days, and on a couple of occasions, weeks after they are left, and just plain not getting a good portion of my calls, have been just as present on my iPhone, as my razr 3xx, nokia 2125, and the crappy little flip phone phone I originally got for free. And I live within 20 mi. of downtown Dallas, so it's not that I live in an area with 'poor coverage' (tho, to me that's everywhere for AT&T, in comparison to other networks)
Just my two cents - maybe it's totally biased and unbased, but I've seen many others with the same complaints. I still love my iPhone, just not the 'mobilePhone' application in particular

it's obv an AT&T problem, how can some phones be fine and sum fudged up, it's all location and AT&T's network. I have no probs in north jersey but some in ny, it's def AT&T
think about it, look at the activation problems on July 11th, it was all AT&T's prob.. They bit off more than they can chew and I have a friend that works for them.. he even said they are so disorganized and behind on their 3g services...Last edited by mkurasz; 08-26-2008 at 02:16 AM. My reception still sucks and the new, amazing 3g features don't work half of the time. I really wish I still had my old iPhone: At least it worked.
Let's face it: Apple did a really crappy job on the 3g AND the Network sucks.

I think it's just the iPhone keeping AT&T afloat, their service is no longer any good and tho their "more bars in more places" is true, it isn't true because of singnal strength, it true because of coverage area, but coverage is one thing and GOOD service is another..
I think if Apple had chosen say... Verizon, AT&T would be S.O.L. and still may be...

Its not only Optus, All the 4 Telco's which are selling the iphone, there costumers are all crying out that the reception & data is rubbish, which it is, if you complain enough to Optus which I have you will get a small amount knocked off your bill every month.
But i think it is a bit of both as my old Nokia was great, and i still live and work in the same place and a noticeable change between the 2 phones when sim cards swapped over.

Well, the iphone might not be the best as a phone, but it certainly is the best for many other things like full web browsing, gaming in a bunch of ways, listening and viewing music and videos like others won't, etc, etc... anywayzz, im not trying to make it fair because this is suppose to be a phone, not a tablet mac, but we have to accept the facts about the phone. IT ROCKS!!!
p.s. also good for video recording and tethering :P

Trust me, the iPhone is far from the only thing keeping AT&T afloat. There are many people who still like and prefer AT&T to other cell providers.
And again, Apple never.. ever would have made a phone compatible with Verizons network. Ever. If they had absolutely no interest in taking the iPhone outside of the US, it may have been an option. Maybe in 4-5 years when LTE is available and being deployed (4G, which both AT&T and Verizon will use) a Verizon iPhone may be an option.

This past weekend I was away but happened to drive through and around the Philly metropolitan area. 3G was very spotty. I noticed that even with 1/2 bar of 3G I was able to use Safari, make and receive calls which i could not do with the same number of Edge bars on my old 2G iphone. Right in the city itself 3G was at full bars but the minute i hit any of the suburbs on either side , 3G was very variable. My feeling is that yes, its ATT's 3G network. Either they are overstating their 3G coverage, or that 3G signal is not as strong, sort of like old AM radio compared to FM.
I assume that in an area supposedly covered by 3G that the signal comes from the same tower that EDGE does? If so then teh 3G signals are definitely not as strong. We have a dead pocket in our area which is on a road that winds its way up a steep hill through a heavily wooded area. My Razr phone (which probably had the best antenna of any cell phone i have owned) drops signal on EDGE for just a moment (although its enough to drop a call). My 2G iphone would do the same and even under 1.1.4 with the 4.6 bootloader it would sometimes hang on and not drop at all. With the 3G iphone, when on EDGE, it will drop momentarily, but if I have 3G on, it will drop for a much longer time until I drive to an area with a better 3G signal.
Just remembered that one of my sons has a Moto V3xx which has 3G. I should ask him how his signal is up that hill. I do know that his friends all have Verizon and their signal in these parts is awful. None of them can get signal at all in our house and sometimes at their own houses they have issues. In that respect I give ATT credit.

i dont think it AT&T.
I had the same problem even on my old ist gen iphone that the phone would not even ring and i would suddenly get notified about a voicemail.
I'm in canada on Fido network. so i cant even say that its a 3G issue as i had same problem on the old iphone on Edge. No dropped calls though. Reception however is still buggy

I was having problems with saffari and error messages.
I contacted O2 as Im in England, the bloke I spoke to told me there was only one tower/mast in my arrea and that it was probably getting overloaded. It wasn't to bad during the day but always got error message at night. The bloke passed my complaint on to 2nd tier compaints and then that night I stopped getting the error messages. I can only presume that O2 engineers tweeked the tower/mast near my house.
Hope this makes sence.
