I wonder what the incentive is for best buy? Apple gets profit from hardware sales... AT&T gets profit from service contracts... best buy gets?

Probably just to get people in the stores, buy accessories, push a best buy service plan, buy itunes cards, music, movies, etc.

I already have mine, but this still sounds like great news for the iPhone community to me.
EDIT: oh, and how could i forget, best buy can try to sell you their own warranty plan which costs more and covers less than Apple's mfg warranty.

Apple really screwed up here. When they created this phone and the compatible firmware, their thought obviously was to make it more secure so the folks in our community here would have a very tough if not impossible (as it looks so far) time figuring out how to unlock this phone. They would have even doubled their sales by now if they hadnt done this. I know about 50 people around dallas here that ive helped JB/Unlock their phones that call me at least twice a week to see if 3G is unlockable yet. Think of all the people I dont know that would/will buy this as soon as its possible. Instead by the time these simple minded folks have the ability, TMobile will have released their newest secret phone in the works, and these folks will just go to it. But hey now best buy carries it, wonderful, now lets drown the market and lose quality standards due to demand. At this point the way Apple, AT&T, and now Best Buy are playing the game, Im almost excited to see what google has to offer from this new phone coming.

Yea Apple would make alot more money if they make it more easier to J/B the 3G but the
reason behind this is AT&T ,They make a deal and drop a butt load of money for Apple to
do this so the can get more service contract.I guess this deal with these 2 guys end soon.

I thought AT&T had exclusive rights to sell the iPhone in the U.S.? If that is true then how is BestBuy selling them? Does that not infringe on AT&T's contract? Could AT&T not sue them and apple? Can anyone make sense out of this? I went to the link and it goes to BestBuy's website. I just thought that AT&T had exclusive rights to sell the iPhone in the U.S.!

I work for Best Buy and the only incentive for bringing the 3G iPhone is too drive more customers into the store which would increase rev and use Geek Squad to push performance service plans which would drive margin. It makes damn good business sense.

The reason the phone is locked to AT&T and all that is because AT&T is paying for 2/3 of the phone! People seem to be forgetting about Apple and AT&Ts plan to release a contract-free version in the future that sells for 599 and 699 but isn't locked. I haven't heard any news on this in ages, so it's possible it was canceled, or that they are just waiting for the market to be sufficiently saturated to reach out to the Tmobile and other non-AT&T customers out there. Perhaps we'll hear more at WWDC?

We are pushing for more opps on AT&T side, Where we dont have core locations theres a bestbuy. More opp for sales more revenue growth for AT&T, and since Bestbuy is doing well with its new mobile store why not?[CENTER] Honda-Tech FTW

I would guess 95% of the people buying from Best Buy are PC users. Mac users wouldn't go to Best Buy unless they were just too far from an Apple store.Mac strong and proud!!!!!

I work at the Best Buy in Mesquite, TX as a Mobile Consultant... some of the stuff you guys are stating is invalid...
Just like AT&T, Best Buy will not offer insurance on the iPhone... As for accessories for the iPhone, we have 3 - 4-Foot sections of nothing but accessories for the iPhone, however there is much more to come since we are about to start carrying the iPhone... Furthermore, as far as what we get out of it is $155 Pure Margin for a New Activation of an iPhone, but that is the same margin as a new line or add a line for any carrier... And as far as buying Apple product from Best Buy stores, I know that on a daily basis our store alone sells as many pc's as we do mac's, however it could differ store to store... But I would have to agree with you guys when it comes to pc users using iPhone because I myself am one of them, however it seems like everyone and their dog that comes in wants an iPhone, and just as someone states in an earlier message, we do provide Geek Squad services for e-mail setup for a whopping $49.99 (Not worth it in my opinion), although you would be surprised at how many people we see come in that can't figure out how to turn their phone on, off, or even take the back's off their phone to get to the battery... For some people it's worth the extra money spent for less hassle of setting up their phone, but most of the people I tell to take your phone and just play around with it for a few days because it's the only way to actually figure out how the phone works and what it does... I say its just a flip of the coin with people who shop at Best Buy, you love it or you hate it... It's like that with most stores nowadays though if you really sit down and think about it... One good or bad experience can mark a store forever so the green may not be greener on the other side as many people think it is... Just my 2 Cents worth...
