I'd be shocked to see this. 3G capabilities entails a completely different chipset. You're not just talking about a software update.

colstiger your right. but if you knew about macs, when the first core 2 duo macbook pros came out, they only had 802.11g wireless but with a simple software upgrade, it went to 802.11n. aka they already had the software in place, they just dsidnt use it.

you mean hardware
yes I agree apple could very well have that hardware already installed, but I would still be shocked (and HAPPY) if this turns out.

I have heard this now from two sources, the other being my Apple contact.. makes me wonder. It DOES make sense, since they will need 3G when they move to the European version, which they are planning on doing this Winter. But there's no reason to have it running yet in the US mode, there's so few actual 3G areas... or it could be they haven't fully tested it yet and so they aren't releasing it at launch.

im not sure if it does have 3g it is aimed for europe. more likely it is for the rapidly growing cingular 3g coverage . . . and I cant think of any good reason not to have it enabled at launch unless it is a situation where the software is not developed far enough for production

Right... so it could be that. They could still be fine-tuning battery life while on 3G, etc.
Digg it.

My bet would be battery life. That seems to be the most reasonable reason not to have the phone be 3G from the start. Since ATT has a underdeveloped 3G network, why sap the battery. Also a upgrade does seem brilliant. In any case, if they could spring 3G or GPS right before launch, it would eviscerate the critics.

nope the main reason is why have a 3G phone when there is hardly any 3G coverage while edge coverage is the sh8. and this came from my managers email and i dont think upper management plays around like that especially in a mass email

this would really be great. i hope the information is legit. maybe they donīt have 3g from the launch is because there is a qualcomm 3g chipset inside which is currently not allowed in new phones in the US due to a patent infringment with a broadcom patent. Maybe there is a another 3g chipset inside the iphone than the qualcomm? time will tell

Maybe we will just have to wait for that special OTA update from the mothership

iPhone won't be 3g @ Launch
Because 3G requires some complex programming, no matter how big the firmware update, it cannot make a device that's EDGE to go up to 3G
