PwnageTool 2.0.2 & Installer 4 Soon
Update: It will be released tomorrow (friday)
According to their blog, the dev team will be releasing PwnageTool 2.0.2 sometime soon -- perhaps today. The release will be available through the built in updater in the current version of PwnageTool and via direct download for new users.
What to expect:
- Ability to pwn iPhone firmware version 2.0.1
- An updated version of Cydia with bugfixes
- Update: Installer 4 will be included with this release!
- No 3g unlock
The dev team also warns on their blog that you should not upgrade to firmware 2.0.1 via iTunes. Wait until PwnageTool 2.0.2 is released and upgrade to 2.0.1 with a custom ispw. Upgrading directly via iTunes will lessen the chances of you being able to unlock in the future. The dev team is still working on a 3g unlock solution.
From the Dev Blog:
Installer 4 and PwnageTool 2.0.2
We’ve just had word that our friends at RiPDev almost have Installer 4 (Beta) ready for public beta release, with that awesome news we’ve decided to include it in the PwnageTool 2.0.2 release, we are waiting for the software from them and we need to quickly test and add a small couple of changes that go alongside Installer.
Expected release date: Friday August 8th.

Good stuff! I've heard the 2.0.1 FW speeds up the text lag. Thanks cash.

When will we get the 3G unlock?
What scares me is they say "If and when". Not just "when".

3G Unlock will be useful outside of the United States in some countries however will be pointless in the US because T-Mobile is the only other GSM carrier and their 3G Network operates on a totally different frequency range. You will basically be stuck with a 3G iPhone running only on EDGE.

This may have already been answered but can the 3g phone be down graded to 2G to be used on a different carrier?

08-07-2008, 01:40 PM #13Downloading .ipsw in Safari
I just wanted to let you know that if you download the .ipsw files with Safari you can just change the extension to .ipsw after it unzips the download.
That way you can keep using Safari and not another browser.
(just letting you know since in the guide for Pwning the 3G you said otherwise.)

Did anyone notice that the dev blog was down for some time earlier. It appears to be back up and running now, but it said it was down for maintenance before. Could this mean they are preparing to release it soon?

From my understanding, 2g Phones can still be unlocked. It's just the 3g phones that are not unlockable atm.
