I have netshare, and cannot for the life of get connected to the internet.

PC
Vista
Iphone 2.0 with netshare.

I can connect to my ad-hoc no problem. But firefox and IE7 will not connect to the internet. Ive tried 3proxy, tinyproxy, and now netshare. I think it has to do with vista. I've also tried port forwarding using putty and winSCP, no luck what so ever.

If anyone has successfully connected to the internet usng your iphone's edge as the connection, PLEASE EXPLAIN HOW!
Thanks in advance.

Connected in Vista using NetShare to type this message.

Step 0 (To be done the first time only):
Network Connections Control Panel
Right-Click "Wireless Network Connection"
Click Properties
Select "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)
Click Properties
Click "Alternate Configuration"
Select "User Configured"
IP address:
192.168.10.2
gateway:
255.255.255.0
Click OK

Step 1:
Control Panel -> Network and Sharing Center
Click "Connect to a network"
Select ad-hoc network

Step 2:
Connect iPhone to the wireless network you just created
Set the IP to static
IP address:
192.168.10.1
gateway:
255.255.255.0

Step 3:
Open up Netshare

Step 4:
Open Firefox
Click on Tools-> Options...
Click on the advanced tab
Click Settings
Set up the proxy manually
Socks: 192.168.10.1
Port 1080

Step 5:
Open a new tab, or window and type "about:config" (Without the quotes)
Do a search for "socks"
Change

network.proxy.socks_remote_dns;false
to
network.proxy.socks_remote_dns;true

Restart Firefox

All done!

This works for me everytime.

Also make sure the phone does not go to sleep, or use insomnia to keep the connection active.

I'm looking forward to trying this.. but I have no idea what you mean when you say network connections control panel. You mean go into the adapter properties and make these changes?

thanks
j

Is there an x64 version of safari? There is another thread about netshare and vista and apparently safari works where firefox has not been working for some...worth checking out...

So here's my question. I just want to use the tethering to download some music, and maybe movies, but not have it connected all the time, maybe a few hours a week or so. I've got other access to internet, however, my apartment complex is stupid and they've got us under a firewall so we can't download music or movies. I'm new to this whole iphone thing, but from what I read, tethering my iphone for music and movies probably isn't a good idea is it?

I would highly advise against using your phone to download any kind of torrnet as it does show extreme upload and download usage which triggers an alert to your cell provider. You can how ever use your phone to tether and surf the internet as this will look normal to your provider and they won't know the differnce. Hope this helps

This is untrue. They can see where the GET requests are coming from.

I think you are ill informed. If your running a proxy which you are it is making your request look as if they are coming from the phone. This was proven at this years DEFCON.
