I have been tethering a Cingular/AT&T Motorola phone with the $20/month unlimited MEdiaNet plan for years now to my iBook (and even tried it once or twice with a PC). I signed on to that plan before it said tethering was verboten. I use it for browsing, e-mail (Eudora) and Yahoo/AOL messenging and especially streaming audio (I live and work in radio hell and can't pick up my favorite talk shows over the air where I live and work) but not for heavy downloads. The only problem is that this ties up my cell phone and if I make a call of any length, I get disconnected from the network, and most voice calls I get roll straight to voice mail. I bought my iPhone (1st gen) primarily for data usage and if something simpler could be done to allow it to tether, I'd be in hog heaven. All I had to do with the Motorola phone was search for and download a modem script and know what entries to put in the phone number, username and password fields in the dialup settings. My kingdom for someone who can come up with a complete solution for the EDGE iPhone that doesn't require a lot of configuring individual apps like Safari, Firefox, Eudora and Yahoo Messenger.

Tethering is fun and all but the phone dies faster than it charges over 3g that's lame

hmmm... can't get it to work... either on mac or PC... Cydia is still alittle buggy too. I uninstalled the IE7 icon mod and now i have no edge icon whatsoever and i can't reinstall the IE7 icon.
as for 3proxy im sure it does work but it doesn't for me
i miss tinyproxy it was so much easier
I tethered my 1st gen iPhone with no problems... and i totally abused it downloaded whole programs which took most of the night and morning because of the slow speeds... AT&T never caught on and if they did they probably didn't give a damn

You have to install 3proxy on your iPhone (as stated in the guide). The IP address is simply the IP of the wifi connection. In windows, in the internet connection dialog box set the SOCKS server proxy to that IP.
On Local Area Network Settings:
1. select Bypass proxy server for local address
2. click the advanced button
3. in the Socks field add your iPhone IP address and port 1080

Tether - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia and read the first paragraph.
A tether is a cord that anchors something movable to a stationary point. There are a number of applications for tethers, but the primary use is limiting the movement of animals. This term is sometimes used in North America to describe using the Internethandheld or personal computer connected to a cell phone via a cable or Bluetooth DUN connection. through a
People, if you don't know what a term means look it up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Stop posting "I don't know what #### is..." It's annoying. A 2 second google search is all that is needed.
