AT&T can do nothing but cancel your service if you are caught tethering. You pay for unlimited data, this is one of the easiest ways to get out of an At&T contract, you just tether and use tons of data.

@mattolson - very wrong. You pay for unlimited MOBILE data. Your terms of contract explicitly state you are NOT allowed to use this for actual browsing, meaning YOU, not AT&T, would be in breach of contract If you abused it.

I'm gonna be moving to Ann Arbor in the summer and the apartment doesn't have internet. Is there any extra fees for tethering on AT&T or is it like Sprint? (My cousin has a blackberry on sprint and tethering is included)

How long til AT&T puts a stop to this by dropping contracts and charging early termination fees due to people abusing this by running **** like BitTorrent over it? Pretty quickly I'm guessing. They can easily see that it's not traffic from the iPhone Safari, Mail, or AppStore stuff. Should be interesting to see the shitstorm.

Guess you didn't read the contract that carefully.

The terms of service says that there is a 5GB cap on "Unlimited" data plans. So much for "Unlimited"

And they even go beyond that. Just like your ISP they can cut you off at any point they consider excessive and there's no set definition of excessive.

AT&T can track and warn/fine users who abuse standard tethering methods. AT&T doesnt however have the ability to track tethering with this method. (socks proxy) The only way they would do anything regarding this method of tethering, is if you go way overboard with your data useage.

Wrong. They can tell the difference between the tethered data via this method and other data.

I have been tethering a Cingular/AT&T Motorola phone with the $20/month unlimited MEdiaNet plan for years now to my iBook (and even tried it once or twice with a PC). I signed on to that plan before it said tethering was verboten. I use it for browsing, e-mail (Eudora) and Yahoo/AOL messenging and especially streaming audio (I live and work in radio hell and can't pick up my favorite talk shows over the air where I live and work) but not for heavy downloads. The only problem is that this ties up my cell phone and if I make a call of any length, I get disconnected from the network, and most voice calls I get roll straight to voice mail. I bought my iPhone (1st gen) primarily for data usage and if something simpler could be done to allow it to tether, I'd be in hog heaven. All I had to do with the Motorola phone was search for and download a modem script and know what entries to put in the phone number, username and password fields in the dialup settings. My kingdom for someone who can come up with a complete solution for the EDGE iPhone that doesn't require a lot of configuring individual apps like Safari, Firefox, Eudora and Yahoo Messenger.
