3g iPhone Yellow Screens = Apple Fail?

Update: Restore via iTunes to download a new version of the firmware (2.0, 5A347). The colors will look much better after you restore. The shipping firmware on the iPhone 3G is 2.0 5A345. After the restore, the colors will be close to v1 iphone colors. posted by tamakin

Update #2: Some have posted that update #1 doesn't solve the issue, the theory is back to bad consistency between various screen manufacturers.

After waiting in lines and going through the excitement many are reporting that their 3g iPhones have noticeably yellow screens.



In the picture above the iPhone on the left is 3g, while the one on the right is a 1st generation model. If you remember back a year ago to the original iPhone launch there were two different screen types. One was perfect and crystal clear while the other had small but noticeable white dots. Once again Apple's quality control processes seem to be lacking leading to these disgusting yellow screens on many units.

heh.. Maybe this is why the in store activations are down.. Reports got back to apple early and they conspired with at&t to take down the in store activation so people wouldn't find out their new toy has a craptastic yellow hue... That would probably affect sales if people were in the stores right after they purchased it, complaining about it in front of every one in line.

I kind of predicted that the iPhone 3G wont be as good quality VS the first gen iPhone. Look at how many more they had to make to support a world wide launch. That will definitely make quality control a pain in the ***. This was something bound to happen. Also I have a feeling that the 3G will probably fall apart easily if you drop it. Medal VS Plastic wonder who is going to win.

yeah, god this sucks. Thank god my families waiting until December to get them. But I know that apple's customer service is amazing in North Carolina. They've replaced an Apple radio remote and iPod video that I broke for free! When I was in new york they said I would have to pay. But apple will probably send out a recall for all of those phones. And maybe up the material or something. It's not like apple at all to use cheap material on it's product, I've got a Macbook and love the plastic. Sorry for everyone who bought the iPhone :-(

mine looks fine. I'll compare it to my girlfriend's 1G phone when I get home but as far as I can tell its ok.

Well I had the Powerbook G4 (medal), a White Macbook and a Black Macbook and I must say that the Powerbook was very durable because i dropped it so many times and it still works. The White Macbook is durable but shows scratches very easily and the white kind of starts to discolor and shows stains. (you can try to google that)
Also from another site they are talking about taking the iPhone 3G apart and they are saying how the G3 is put together differently. (maybe to save cost or who knows what)
Who cares what I say hahaha back to the iPhone.
Only time will tell.
