As MirrorminD mentioned, it's prob just a clause in the agreement so other companies or individuals can't make turn-by-turn software. I'm sure Apple is getting a nice few quid from TomTom to have exclusive rights on this.

lost GPS reception in central yesterday took about 30mins to getit back whilst i was driving round in circles,,, was not amused need to dig out my reliable tomtom 710 again
