I have heard that if you currently have an AT&T contract you can keep the same price data plan. You'd only be renewing your contract for 2 years... but not necessarily adding on an additional 2 years to your current contract.

I've also been told from an apple employee in Texas that for now they will require activation in AT&T AND Apple stores because AT&T employees are incompetent and provide no problem support. I was also informed that if you have ever unlocked your phone, they will know and void your warranty. You can lock it/restore it, they will find out. So beware! I want to upgrade my 8gb iphone to the 16gb white iphone, but I will now wait until the commotion dies down, and the instore activation has been lifted.

Doesnt work like that, to terminate your contract you have to return the phone

Are you sure? I believe you only have to return the device if you cancel within 30 days and you don't want to pay the termination fee.

If you really did have to return the phone, would they give you a full refund? What if it were "stolen" and you didn't want to continue the service?

No more revenue sharing

Quote from AT&T site -

"The new agreement between Apple and AT&T eliminates the revenue-sharing model under which AT&T shared a portion of monthly service revenue with Apple. Under the revised agreement, which is consistent with traditional equipment manufacturer-carrier arrangements, there is no revenue sharing and both iPhone 3G models will be offered at attractive prices to broaden the market potential and accelerate subscriber volumes. hmmm, im not sure. According to at&ts policy on the old iPhone it must be returned within 3 days for the fee to be waved or 30 in like new condition. After that your charged 175$ and you can't return the device. (I think they thought this was a good idea since at the time you couldn't unlock it)

"AT&T's President of National Distribution Glenn Lurie, who revealed that all iPhone activations will take place in-store."

I think!! You have to think about it. Only sell in stores? No way. You will be able to buy online, either apple or att and then activate in store within 30 days. Or face penalty.

If they control the supply of iPhones how could you NOT activate it in store? Also if you manage to get an iPhone unscathed from a store unactivated and hacktivate it how could they know?

People cant seem to understand that Apple advertised the subsidized price today, you cant buy it without a contract. Period.

Att lost money through unlocking, instead of sharing revenue with apple for the new subscribers they are sharing it with the person who buys the phone.

Cheaper iphones means more people buying them, more people buying means more activation fees for ATT and more revenue, the subsidies will actually make ATT more money.

There are always people who will import them from overseas but ATT isnt that bad for me to pay double for a phone for no reason.

Well, it looks like I'm gonna either switch to the Bold or use my EDGE iPhone till it dies. Good game Apple. I like paying 80 dollars for unlimited data + texting + 1000 minutes. What a debacle.
