Default AT&T Stepping up their 3G Game
My biggest gripe with AT&T and the iphone was speed. When i switched from an iphone to a HTC 8925 or as AT&T calls it the "Tilt" i was blown away how fast it was. The 3G alone was decent speed but the new standard is HSDPA and HSUPA. It isnt available everywhere but the areas it is, boy is it sweet. Here is some info from a news article that made me make this post:

AT&T has announced that it will have completed a country wide rollout of its HSUPA 3G service by the end of June. We're guessing that a little voice from Cupertino might have been hurrying AT&T along. You know, just like AT&T boosted EDGE speeds last year on the iPhone's launch day
The network offers theoretical speeds of 1.4 Mbps down and 800Kbps up

I know pricing etc is not out but:
If you get a G3 plan, will that cost more than the current plan?

ahh all you poor souls that live in the 3rd world..... in asia we have had 'mobile broadband' for years now! We have connection links running at 7.5+mb/s in some cases if you have the right gear. I think that the iphone has really done wonders to the north american cellular network in terms of rapid upgrades but sad to say your still behind. Granted bigger place etc etc....

@iphoneroeth - it wont cost any extra - think of 3G like a free upgrade from EDGE

@quicksilverhk - Yes for celluar technology the US is lacking but we far surpass Asia in so many other ares like R & D, hospitals, etc....

@everyone else - here is a link to AT&T coverage area:

    AT&T Coverage Viewer

In the legend just check the box that says 3G and see if your area is on it - their 3G is now integrated with HSDPA/HSUPA lets hope that it is enabled on the phone.

I don't see 3G on that map. Just Voice, Data, Smart Limits, and Mobile TV....

but isnt the speed determined by the hardware? if the suggested speed is that high then the actual speed will be lower right?

that's right. If the hardware you have doesn't support higher speeds, then you won't get them. Also if your signal strength isn't 100%, you won't get 100% speed. There's many variables that affect it, but regardless, it's gonna be way freaking faster, even at 60 or 70% of the possible speed

totally agreed... mobile service (speed) in some asian countries puts other places to shame! But I am still anticipating the nice work US careers are gonna bring out. The introduction of HSUPA is a big step forward afterall.

On a somewhat unrelated note does anyone know anything about the WiMAX network that Clearwire and Sprint/Nextel are putting in place and how it compares/relates to the 3G network?

You can't click on it on the whole US map, but once you narrow down to your area, a little checkmark option next to "Show 3G Coverage" will pop up, allowing you to see 3G in your area.
