Operation Fine EDGE beefs up EDGE Throughput
AT&T has been running an operation code named "Fine EDGE" for the last 6 weeks--increasing EDGE data from 40 kb/s to 80 kb/s on average--by adding more bandwidth on their poorer performing towers, according to an AT&T rep who spoke with Gizmodo.

good to know. Shame that it won't have 3G capabilities, but at least with EDGE is won't be the drying paint speeds of GPRS.

Yah. Comments on a news post I saw on Gizmodo brought up a good point, though. Most people who are spending $600 on a top of the line "revolutionary" new phone are also the same people who are pretty constantly by an open WiFi network. EDGE is more than enough at 80 Kb/s to fill the gap while we're in between places.

EDGE is far to inconsistent. I too am close to wifi most of the day but I have trouble keeping a strong signal.

LOL. We've been at 80 all this time... I guess the 3G is that much faster!
