How does messages app work?

I am writing an application and I cannot find any information about how the native messages app works. Is there any documentation for either receiving or sending? I need some basic information about mainly the protocol works to send out a message. This app would basically send a text from another iOS device. Does anyone have any suggestions?

UPDATE: We need to know how to auto send an SMS with apples Message framework ...The app Vlingo does it after three seconds. Here is a thread that talks about it but it does not seem that they resolved any of their original questions.
