Missing core apps after sync

Hello, I'm new to modmyi so I hope this is in the right place. I've found similar threads, but can't find an answer that works, yet.

I tried to sync a second-hand iPhone to itunes, and after the sync, the core apps were missing. I'm relatively new to iPhone. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

What apps are you missing?

Phone, safari, iPod, messages, calendar

Was it jailbroken? If so there may have been Categories on it which will hide icons if they are not taken out of the folders before a restore Install SBsettings and check Poof! under the "More" section.
