App sorting

What file on the iphone, if any, tells the iphone which app goes where? Like page and position. It would be great to be able to edit it on a computer then sent it to the iPhone and re-spring and voila, your apps are re-arranged the way you want.

Have you tried moving them yourself to where you want them? Just press and hold any icon and they will begin to wiggle, then you can move to a location on your springboard or another page.

Uhhhhhhhh... Duh. Of course I know that. But have you tried to arrange 9 pages of apps by dragging them around 1 by 1? An program on the computer which has all of your apps listed where you can see them all at once and just drag them to the order you want them and then save that setting and send to iPhone. That would be great.

It is somewhat tricky to understand and modify properly, but /var/mobile/Library/Preferences/com.apple.springboard.plist contains the Icon ordering.
