Running a shell script from Ipod Touch App

Hi all,
I was wondering if it was possible to run a shell script (.sh file, chmod'ed to execute) from an iPod app that I write. I have the shell script written, and it works when executed as root from Mobile Terminal. I just want to create an app that can be run from the springboard that will execute this script after an certain passwrod/gesture is entered. Is this possible? I'd like to know before I shell out for a Mac to get the iPhone SDK
