iphone display brightness with official sdk

Hi,
I need to write an application that is always displayed and connected to a server.
The problem is that if the iphone/ipot does not go on stand by (this is what I need) the battery will be drained very quickly. If the application could lower the brightness to the minimum when there is nothing to do I could save a lot of battery.

I did not find an official way to do it, is there one?
The only way is with a jailbroken device? And with a jailbroken device is there an api to do it?

The backlight API is unpublished and can not be used by an AppStore app.

I posted a while ago how to adjust the backlight brightness if you are writing a jailbreak app.
