Coding open source SMS app, need some info

I am sick of all 4 SMS apps out there, so I want to build my own. I need to know a few things first. As of right now, these are the only things that I can see being a possible issue:
  • accessing messages (and piecing them together into a conversation if each message is saved individually)
  • making it the default SMS app
If there is anything else that anyone can think would be another possible difficulty, please let me know.

If i may ask, since you are sick with the 4 apps out there, what kind of sms app are you planning? Any crazy features?

No crazy features. I just want an SMS app that isn't ridiculously slow, looks kinda like the default one, and has a landscape keyboard.

Hi God720

I might have an idea to piggy back onto your app. I'm trying to figure a way to access the sms app from my mac to be able to send/receive sms. I know the easy thing to do would be to just VNC it but I want a dedicated app on my mac to do it. I am hoping to be able to access the iphone via USB to do it however I know wifi would probably be easier.

Anyways,

I believe I will eventually need a iphone based app to link to in order to pull it off, doubt apple will let me use theirs lol. Let me know what you have come up with so far with implementing your app.

Sorry, but I don't want to fill my SMS app with features. My plan is to make a clone of Apple's SMS app with a landscape keyboard.

Well, if you're going to replace the default SMS app, you're going to have to replace the popup that appears when you get a new message.
Since you'll have to replace that, you might as well add a quick reply feature. If it has that, then I'll definitely use your app.
Also, make sure you use an image as a background, even if it's just a solid color. That way we can use winterboard to change it easily.
