I want to start developing apps for the iPhone. Where to begin?

I'm using Windows, and I have a jailbroken iPhone 3G with 2.2...

My Questions are:

1. Where do I start? I have the preBuiltToolchain, but wasn't able to do anything with it, and before I go over this guide
Installing toolchain for windows - ModMyi - Wiki

2. Also, if it's possible to develop for free on windows? It's apple so, I wanted to double check this.

3. and if I'll get a nice GUI, or is that mac exclusive? If so.... will vmware do the job?

SDK works with Intel Macs. The guides and "how to" are great here at Apples Dev. center http://developer.apple.com/iphone/
Other then this^^ I'm not sure what your asking for?

Answer to your questions
1. buy a mac. cheapest would be a mac mini but i would recommend you to buy a macbook because its a bit faster.
2. Yes it is possible but without the official Apple iPhone SDK.
3. You dont get a nice GUI with the windows toolchain. If your planing to use vmware to emulate macosx to make use of the Apple iPhone SDK, i hope you succeed where many have failed.

Cheers

I am planning to use my Mac Mini for 2.x development, but I did 1.x development under Cygwin on Windows. There is no GUI with the open source toolchain (yet).

If not purchasing a Mac, you can jailbreak and use the toolchain running directly on the iPhone (installed from Cydia) and edit on Windows under Cygwin, or using SSH and something painful like vi or not as painful emacs (which I used on Windows/Cygwin) (is emacs ported to the iPhone?) to edit on the iPhone.
