good question. I am not a developer but would be interested in an answer to this.. I'm sure there is an answer on there website. If not they have great online chat support. My guess would be that they do not charge you on a free application. Think of your free application as a sample at a store. It attracts you to the store, you try it, and you say "hey applications are cool! I wonder if the paid ones are even better!" and in turn you spend some of your cold hard earned cash on an app. I believe Apple only makes its profit on the paid apps in the store charging developers (30% or 40%-dont quote me here) on the apps total sales.
