SDK App Distribution Uncovered

I'm having a hard time grasping the concept(s) behind app distribution...

Am I correct in assuming SDK apps can only be distributed if approved by Apple?

I'm getting ready to release a system using a custom app which requires a few other hardware components such as a computer be sold with it and I'm assuming for this reason apple won't approve distribution via app store.

I know there are other options such as ad-hoc delivery but if it's limited to 100 users that certainly won't be enough.

Am I missing something here? There has got to be some means of getting this thing distributed properly otherwise I'll have to use jailbreak and I would really prefer not to.

AppStore distribution requires Apple approval, but they generally disallow applications for breaking the rules.

If you application is useless without the rest of the system, give it away on the AppStore and have people buy the system directly from you.
