I found an excellent site for parts, cheapest I could find. They also have all the tools and how-to videos you would need.
www.directfix.com
I bought a touch screen, battery and all the tools needed with 3 day shipping for $64! Best prices by FAR than any other site I found.
I will post on how the repair goes!

Lol sorry I forgot to repost.
Repair successful on the screen. I installed a new battery as well, however there were a few issues with the battery install. I thought everything went smooth, however, the camera is now stuck on shutter and the battery dies at 11%. I've let it completely die off to try and calibrate it but no success.
I figured I could restore phone, bring into apple and hope for a replacement. I'm pretty sure they will open it up and see I have been in it.

In screwing around with my old 3GS I managed to break off one of the gold pins on the sim card connector (junctor connector). Think it'd be fixable? Soldering is one thing have absolutely no experience in so I'd certainly rather reward you for your help.

There's nothing impossible about it, but it is put on by "flowing" (heating the PCB instead of soldering) and it's risky to reflow anything. So it can be reflowed, but it's a 50/50 shot.

It's just sitting in my drawer collecting dust right now so I don't have a problem taking the chance. I'll order up a connector and get back to you...

Got enough experience with the i4 to do case swaps now. Wasn't going to do them before I got them down pat to where I could do it fast enough to bother with it. Anything that takes too long isn't worth doing.

is it?
I've done a 3gs housing replacement once and it took me a couple hours (1st time is always the longest). Now my friend wants me to do a white housing replacement on his i4 but I'm afraid I might mess it up. If the i4 is easier to mess with than a 3G/3Gs, I'd be more willing to replace his housing for him.

Ok some background on the phone (or scroll down for cliffnotes): I bought it used with a cracked screen. I've replaced the screen as well as the back housing and it was working fine until I jumped into a pool with it at the beginning of the summer. I opened it up and dried it in a bag of rice. It turned on and worked fine other than the fact that the power and home button didn't work. I found ways around this problem by waiting for a call/text or by charging it just so the screen would light up and allow me to slide to unlock. I tried replacing the home flex ribbon cable myself and that didn't fix the home button issue so I just left my 3gs in my drawer and the battery has completely drained since. Now when I try to charge it, it tells me I need to plug it into iTunes. iTunes then tells me to restore and I get error 1611 when I try restore.
Cliffnotes: power and home button don't work. Also battery is now drained and I get error 1611 when I try to restore it.
Hopefully there's a way to make this 3Gs come back to life. I've been trying to rough it out and wait for the new iPhone but my patience has been growing thin. I feel like I'm going through withdrawal every day that passes by without my 3Gs.Last edited by ensigma; 08-30-2011 at 09:50 PM.
