I got a question I would like to ask Grant:

What hardware do I need to record about 7 tracks separately at the same time direct onto my macbookpro? (so I end up with 7 wave files).
I say hardware as I have already the software I think. I have Pro Tools 9 for a long time but never installed it as mainly I have been working with midi using Cubase 6 and once it's mixed down to audio I have been using Adobe Audition.

In my little restaurant I have a Yamaha powered (1200W (600W X2)) 12 track mixer and an Alesis Quadraverb for vocal effect, all mics are SM58's, I recorded a couple of gigs just using the tape out from the mixer into the mac line in but of coarse this just gives me a single wave file of all tracks - not so good for mastering!

In my home I use a small USB Audio Interface (Roland Tri-Capture (24 bit)), but if I get a bigger interface how do I configure Pro Tools to capture each track separately? I want all the vocal's & guitars recorded at the same time but come out on separate tracks. What am I missing?

I have recorded a few songs in pro studios and am aware they record a master for monitoring purposes then record each track one by one, but the drums are usually recorded in one go even though the kit is set-up with multiple mic's, how do they do this?

Can it be done on the Mac or do I need to buy a multi-track digital recorder?

I was thinking I need something like this:
    http://www.amazon.com/PreSonus-FireS...4683487&sr=1-1
But how would I set this up with my mixer which in not digital, it only has left & right out's + tape out + phones?

I look forward to a "long winded" answer.

    Thanks,

    Ian.

    Answer you shortly, Ian..

But no matter what theme I enjoy and flirt with I still always come back to "auros" with UniAW. Mostly because the gray scale shadowing complements the tones in the weather animations - the best.. in my opinion. Still love this:

Good observation, Krima! I DO have Boover. I'll just need to play with it to get it right. Boover's settings never made much sense to me in terms of predicting what it would do.

I use that same badge but use boover to drop if down and move it to the left a little. Looks awesome.

    Try these settings:

    <integer>2</integer>
    <key>isEnabled</key>
    <true/>
    <key>offsetX</key>
    <real>-11</real>
    <key>offsetY</key>
    <real>12</real>

Here is a VERY rough recording of me at my new restaurant
Me singing, me on my acoustic guitar, backing tracks composed by me, me making all the mistakes.
Recording is rough, distorted due to excessive volume in some songs but ah well..
It's just parts of 7 or 8 songs thrown together in one .mp3 file.
Don't be too hard on me.

You got skills, bro...!! You can tell you were a signed artist in the past.. But time can be unkind, can't it... .. But it hasn't been unkind to you.. :-)..

Ian, ProTools uses it's own proprietary format for hardware... They're sort of "the Borg" of the music software world since they're in every Pro Studio in the world. What PhotoShop is to the graphics worlds - ProTools is to the audio recording world.

Fortunately there's one company of 'smaller' level audio interfaces they bought out called M-Audio. You can look for any one of many M-Audio interfaces sold on eBay and they will do your requirements for recording several tracks separately.. A USB interface will have more limitations in terms of thruput but for your needs it may be perfect. I use only Firewire Interfaces from M-Audio.. But USB ones should be just fine.

PM me if you have any trouble.

    Thanks Grant,

Yes time has done its damage but it was my first time singing for many years, I can hear the nerves in my voice, hopefully better recordings will follow.

Regarding the interface, I'm still not sure how this works with a mixer? Does all mic's & guitars etc plug directly into the interface then does each interface channel have an output to go to the mixer?
This seems weird to me because it means going through two separate pre amps (one for interface then one on powered mixer).
If you are unsure just say so mate, I need to be sure I get it right before shelling out thousands of dollars.

    Thanks.

Pre's (preamps - or what you're calling a 'mixer') is very different from 'audio interface'.
The audio interface turns actual audio into a digital waveform. And a mixer or preamp amplifies the signal from its source to a recordable level.

NOW.. Many AUDIO INTERFACES have a couple channels of preamp in them replacing the need for a mixing board all together. Hook up the the LEFT/RIGHT out of your AUDIO INTERFACE right to your speakers... Use the headphone jack on the front of the audio interface to listen to mix while cutting tracks.. Then use one of the two (usually two) preamped inputs on the audio interface itself to plug guitars and mics into. The 'trims' for those channels in terms of controlling input gain is usually on the front panel of the audio interface itself -- and there's usually even Phantom power for 'hi-end' mics built into the interface as well..

Look at the Apogee DUET online.. Pretty good price and a 'plug and play' option.. Hook up your mics or instrument line level signal stuff right to it. Plug into firewire jack and you're a recording studio. These days - most 'home production' musicians don't use a mixing board at all. Mixing boards are old school. Everything is mixed IN PRO TOOLS itself.. Hundreds of YouTube videos out here will teach you ProTools and even a lot of what I've stated.. Your best bet is the Apogee DUET FIREWIRE. Plug & Play (& record).
Here to help if I can. If I can't I know someone who can!
