Ian, ProTools uses it's own proprietary format for hardware... They're sort of "the Borg" of the music software world since they're in every Pro Studio in the world. What PhotoShop is to the graphics worlds - ProTools is to the audio recording world.

Fortunately there's one company of 'smaller' level audio interfaces they bought out called M-Audio. You can look for any one of many M-Audio interfaces sold on eBay and they will do your requirements for recording several tracks separately.. A USB interface will have more limitations in terms of thruput but for your needs it may be perfect. I use only Firewire Interfaces from M-Audio.. But USB ones should be just fine.

PM me if you have any trouble.

    Thanks Grant,

Yes time has done its damage but it was my first time singing for many years, I can hear the nerves in my voice, hopefully better recordings will follow.

Regarding the interface, I'm still not sure how this works with a mixer? Does all mic's & guitars etc plug directly into the interface then does each interface channel have an output to go to the mixer?
This seems weird to me because it means going through two separate pre amps (one for interface then one on powered mixer).
If you are unsure just say so mate, I need to be sure I get it right before shelling out thousands of dollars.

    Thanks.

    Ian.

Pre's (preamps - or what you're calling a 'mixer') is very different from 'audio interface'.
The audio interface turns actual audio into a digital waveform. And a mixer or preamp amplifies the signal from its source to a recordable level.

NOW.. Many AUDIO INTERFACES have a couple channels of preamp in them replacing the need for a mixing board all together. Hook up the the LEFT/RIGHT out of your AUDIO INTERFACE right to your speakers... Use the headphone jack on the front of the audio interface to listen to mix while cutting tracks.. Then use one of the two (usually two) preamped inputs on the audio interface itself to plug guitars and mics into. The 'trims' for those channels in terms of controlling input gain is usually on the front panel of the audio interface itself -- and there's usually even Phantom power for 'hi-end' mics built into the interface as well..

Look at the Apogee DUET online.. Pretty good price and a 'plug and play' option.. Hook up your mics or instrument line level signal stuff right to it. Plug into firewire jack and you're a recording studio. These days - most 'home production' musicians don't use a mixing board at all. Mixing boards are old school. Everything is mixed IN PRO TOOLS itself.. Hundreds of YouTube videos out here will teach you ProTools and even a lot of what I've stated.. Your best bet is the Apogee DUET FIREWIRE. Plug & Play (& record).
Here to help if I can. If I can't I know someone who can!

Did anyone convert NateD's newest lock screen to WidgetWeather yet? I'll do it. I just don't want to do it if it's already been done.

    @ Grant,

Thanks for the info but I think we have got mixed up somewhere, I want to record (multiple tracks) while playing the gig live, not is a studio environment/home. The mixer in a live performance is essential for good balance, eq & effects sends & returns, not old school M8, all bands have a mixer of some sort when performing live, it's standard PA equipment!
Studio recording is completely different from live recording and not what I'm after, I can easily do some mastering at home later.

Thanks anyway, I will try to research what I need.

I think I must ask permission from my company to go home to support my family, they have no electricity, food is hard to come by, no gasoline, no cash as ATM's are either offline or looted, depression is setting in and I can do nothing from here!

This is the first in any of your posts I am reading about the mix of live "show" and recording. That's a horse of a different color.. Much more complex. If you want clean signals going to the recording that aren't "double pre-amped" as you said.. You'll need to invest in a "splitter snake" to send the channels from the stage to both the recording and the mixer for monitors and house sound.

When you said you wanted to record "one track at a time" that's what told me immediately that you were talking "studio" and not live. I'll read thru your other posts again and see if I can get the gist of what you want to capture live and I'll PM you more input, M8..

And yes - get home to your family ASAP. They're living in a horrible situation from what I see on the news. Will be praying.

    Thanks Grant,

Ah.. the splitter snake, you just reminded me, I used these before many many years ago, we had a 32 channel splitter snake, what a mass of cables that was! But yes, this makes sense to me.

To be honest the recording thing is not important now, I just sent an email to Germany asking for a flight home. I fear for my families health/safety, not sure what I can do but I can't let them suffer alone.

I'm sure they would if I asked them, but visa's take ages to obtain! Anyway, I can't leave all me guitars to the looters.
How many of you sleep with an 8" buck knife (Rambo ) hidden in a sheath hanging behind your headboard? Can't have guns in the house... too many kids. Ah home sweet home.

    Ian,
You can always get the hand safe that reads your fingerprints to access your firearm. Made from GunVault. Also has a cable lock so no one can take the safe.

My Lil friend sleeps in there all ready for low light combat lol.
