open wordpad as an admin..
go to c: windows/system32/drivers/etc... let you show all things in that folder.. open host dokument...
erase the line 188.8.131.52 gs.apple.com.. save it
restart pc.. try again..
should fix it dude
be sure you run wordpad as an admin...

I'm on 4.3.5. Have got a jailbroken Ipod touch 4g - Redsn0w, used a 4.3.4 restore IPSW.
And I definitely messed with the Hosts file (oh sh!t) there used to be 3 lines down the bottom, and some idiot on another forum told me to only keep the one that reads: #184.108.40.206 gs.apple.com
1. What my hosts file looks like...now
2. What Tiny Umbrella says (I just installed it)...
I need help guys, and for some reason I can't start threads on this site???
And I really want to update to 5.0.1
ALSO, it has problems even backing up my iPod - there's a -54 error and it will not back up!!Tennis is my life..
And secondly, my passion for Apple devices..

This means that either trying to restore the ios is less than 5.0.1, or as D said.
Which device and which fw you have?
Here you will find a tutorial for all the idevices
and here the solution to all problems

i think so mate..
that gs.apple line is written by tinyumbrella i think or some thing like umbrella.. is there an umbrella hosts document in that etc folder?
delete it too if it is there...the whole file. umbrella creates it again next time
@ pro1ipod.. damn whats that whole thing in your hosts document?
mine looks like this.. and nothing more
# Copyright (c) 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp.
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
# For example:
# 220.127.116.11 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 18.104.22.168 x.acme.com # x client host
# localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.
# 127.0.0.1 localhost
# ::1 localhost
