Ok, so - I got everything to work: the shadow, mask, and overlay. However, the overlay doesn't work on all icons. I'm guessing this can be disabled by developers in the app's plist, no?
Is there any way to force AppIconOverlay to work with every icon?

no this is why you have to incorporate your overlay by coming up with ways to use the mask and the shadow together and just use a transparent overlay. you can accomplish this by using different shades of gray. It works the same as if you use an image mask in photoshop on a layer.
no the shadow will always be on the bottom if you want it to appear like you are using an overlay (such as in my graphite theme) you have to use different shades of gray to make the icon slightly see-through and to have the shadow have the actually color you want shown if that makes sense. it's like i said to the other person use image mask in photoshop layers to see what it would look like on your icon imageLast edited by santaf; 10-13-2011 at 01:55 AM.

Is there anyway to change the icon size so its not only 118 x 120 for the retina icons? I doubt there is but figured I would ask anyway. I've always felt the icons were a bit on the big side. I've seen several new themes out that was orbs or circles and it looks like they are changing the size but it might just be a backgorund effect used witht he masking.

make sure the images in there are called this... assuming it's for an iphone 4/4s:
AppIconMask@2x~iphone.png
AppIconOverlay@2x~iphone.png
AppIconShadow@2x~iphone.pngLast edited by santaf; 02-28-2012 at 03:10 PM.

oh woops haha didn't notice i coppied the names of my ipad theme one, sorry. yes it must have iphone at the ned of all of them. i'm sure you are deselecting and reselecting the theme to restart winterboard with the new icon images. winterboard needs to clear the cache. If you are doing this, and isn't working, then can you post the file path of the com.apple.mobileicons.framework? The problem might be there.

well hmm well basically you want the mask to be black everywhere except the inside of the border that should be white. To get that dark to light effect you will have to make that gradient a gray on the mask. The darker the gray, the more transparent the image will be. So your mask is very close to how it should be, and your shadow should not have a black background. If you post an image of what the icon with an image should look like, and the psd maybe i can help but I can't make any promises

No problem I hope we solve this. I edited what I said above. I added this:

Here I gave it a try maybe you'll like this, it isn't exactly the same. I supply you the mask overlay and shadow, and a new psd that will allow you to create icons that work in the same way the iphone creates icons, with the mask and shadow. Here is a sample of what it would look like.

edit: hmm it isn't letting me attatch the zip hold on
edit 2: here I'll just upload it to another website and post download link here it isn't working: http://www.sendspace.com/file/t4milyLast edited by santaf; 02-28-2012 at 11:00 PM.

emmm. i dont really understand... i dont have photoshop either. I use a custom theme and encounter auto skinning issues, as in the icons all look squarish. Stock apps all have a squarish appearance, while App-store applications have the mask applied. So if i get the mask pictures in 24 i'll be able to apply the mask manually? could someone kindly upload the standard iphone mask pngs in the 24 format please? and please tell me where i must place the mask images in order for it to take effect? I'm on iOS 5.. Any help will be greatly appreciated!
