Default Dreamworks to Launch "DreamTab" an Android-Powered Tablet Aimed at Children this Spring

Dreamworks, the animation studio behind movies such as Shrek, is preparing to launch its own Android-powered “DreamTab” tablet to gain a piece of the pie in the ever-growing tablet market. According to The New York Times, the 8-inch device will be aimed at kids and it will cost under $300 when it launches this spring. The animation studio has partnered with Fuhu, the company that manufactures the Nabi tablet line for Toys R Us, to produce the DreamTab, which will be sold with a range of DreamWorks-branded accessories, including headphones and protective bumper cases. The device is said to be introduced at CES in Las Vegas next week.

The tablet is said to be programed like a cable channel. Dreamworks’ head of digital strategy and new business development Jim Mainard, said that he wants to “push out a new character moment every day of the year.” The DreamTab is also said to help kids learn to draw by using “the same stylus technology that DreamWorks artists use to make movies.” Furthermore, the tablet isn’t just for kids. The parental controls can be disabled and the tablet can be placed in “parent mode,” which provides roughly the same computing power as an iPad,” according to the NYT. A 12-inch version of the DreamTab is also said to be a part of the plans but it’s unclear when the 12-inch iteration will make its debut.

For those of you who didn’t know, Fuhu ended up selling more than two million units of its own Nabi tablets, aimed at children between the ages of 6 and 11 throughout 2013. With children as young as 2 using their parents’ tablets already, the company appears to be confident in the DreamTab’s ability to be successful. Fuhu’s chief executive, Jim Mitchell, said the following regarding the matter:

By teaming with DreamWorks to create a device that will have original content — original content that is automatically and frequently updated — we are not following consumers, we are getting ahead of them.
Such a tablet can prove to be quite a competitor for Apple’s iPad lineup in the market of younger users but only time will tell. In the past, not many tablets have been able to compete but with big names such as Dreamworks targeting their niche market, things may change going forward.

    And iDevice users care why?

Hopefully it will be completely unbreakable. iPads are not suitable for small children.
