Default Availability of the Retina iPad Mini Improves at AT&T, Verizon and Apple Stores

Apple seems to have finally made some headway in the Retina iPad Mini display production as the device now appears to be showing up at AT&T and Verizon stores across the nation. The Apple Store ship-by dates have also improved to one to three business days. Originally noted by CNET, AT&T’s web-based “in-store availability” checker is showing supply of various Retina iPad mini versions at locations around the US. Verizon also appears to be receiving stock as its website now quotes shipping dates by Saturday, while spot checks find select stores with batches of the device as well.

The refreshed supply comes three weeks after AT&T was quoting ship-by-dates of 21 days or more and Verizon was also short, with anticipated ship-by-dates pushed out by ten or more days. As mentioned before, ship dates from Apple’s own online store have improved to one to three days as well, up from five to ten in November. The improvement in availability suggests that Retina iPad Mini production is finally catching up to its demand.

As many of you may already know, Apple launched the iPad mini with Retina display in November after announcing the device in late October without specifying a firm release date. Even before the device hit store shelves, industry insiders were saying Apple was facing severe supply constraints of the mini’s Retina panels. During the company’s quarterly conference call for the fourth quarter, CEO Tim Cook hinted at manufacturing issues stating “it’s unclear whether we will have enough for the quarter or not.” The issue seems to be slowly resolving with the availability of the device increasing, just in time for the holidays as well.

Why would they artificially short their supply? When you don't have an item in supply, you can't sell it.
