Default Next-Gen iPad mini Rumored to be Slightly Thicker to Accommodate a Larger Battery

According to accessory manufacturers at a major Hong Kong electronics trade show, the next-gen iPad mini will be a fraction of a millimeter thicker and feature a larger battery to offset the power requirements of its rumored Retina display. Japanese website, Macotakara, citing iPad case makers states the second-gen iPad mini will grow from 7.2 millimeters thick to 7.5 millimeters thick and gain 0.3 millimeters in width. The interviews supposedly took place at China Sourcing Fair 2013 in Hong Kong, an annual trade show for manufacturers of all stripes.

The changes are said to be similar to those made for Apple’s third-gen full-size iPad, which was the first to feature a Retina screen. At the time of its release it was noted that the iPad 3 gained 0.6 millimeters over the iPad 2.

With the added thickness, Apple’s new 7.9-inch tablet is pictured with a cutout for a rear-facing microphone, a feature which showed up on leaked pre-release parts for the original iPad mini but didn’t make it to the final product. The next-gen iPad mini is said to debut alongside a slimmer, lighter full-size iPad at Apple’s October 22 media event. Both devices are also said to be sporting the iPhone-equivalent 8-megapixel rear camera.
