Microsoft's Surface RT Challenging iPad in Global Education Market
Microsoft is taking the tablet war right to Apple in a market that is near to the Cupertino, California-based tech giant's heart.
According to sources close to the late Apple visionary, Steve Jobs was profoundly interested in how the iPad could impact education and learning (inside and outside of the classroom). As a result of this passion, the iPad and a wide array of apps and services have been a huge hit among educators and students.
But the iPad may not have a "lock" on the education market if Microsoft can do anything about it. For starters, Microsoft is slashing the price of its Surface RT tablet to just $199 for schools and colleges looking to procure the devices for academic use.
The "Microsoft Surface for education limited-time offer" will be available between June 17 and August 31, 2013, according to a brochure detailing the program. Under the program, Surface RTs without keyboards will go for $199 (normal estimated retail price is $499). With a touch keyboard, the discounted price is $249 (estimated retail price is $599), and with a type keyboard the discounted price is $289 (estimated retail price is $629).
At this time, Microsoft is said to be working on a next-gen Surface RT that could be available as early as this fall.

Suggestion for Apple: start offering real discounts for schools and educators as opposed to $50 off a MacBook and no discount on an iPad. Also, encourage educational app development for students older than 7.

Good move on Microsoft's part. Apple is too greedy to offer a similar deal to students since as far as they are concerned, apple has a "lock" on everyone already.
