Apple's iPad Mini Elicits Huge Demand in Hong Kong and China
Apple’s iPad mini didn’t exactly elicit the “must buy” response from much of the Western media, but customers in Hong Kong and China have exhibited a near “insatiable” appetite for the device.
Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brian White claimed his checks in Hong Kong and China uncovered an “insatiable demand” for the iPad mini. The smaller of Apple’s iPad devices launched on Nov. 2 in Hong Kong, and this past week nearly all models of the device were sold out during White’s checks.
The story isn’t much different in mainland China where the device launched on Dec. 7. Strong demand at local retail stations on top of Apple’s Chinese retail stores being out of stock this week point to strong sales numbers, or a strained supply chain approaching the Chinese New Year.
"Prior to the China launch, we indicated that the iPad mini would be the 'next big thing in China' and we believe this phenomenon is starting to develop. In our view, the smaller form factor and lower price point will allow Apple to sell the iPad mini in more meaningful volumes versus the regular-size iPad." - White
