Urban Outfitters to Replace Cash Registers With iPads in 400 Stores

Urban Outfitters is dropping cash registers and picking up iPads.

Urban Outfitters chief information officer Calvin Hollinger said the retail giant would be equipping their stores with iPad sales systems resulting in both saved space and money, while allowing for increased customer interaction. The Business Insider article claims that Urban Outfitters will never purchase a traditional cash register again.

The new checkout system will cost five times less than a conventional register and will utilize a swivel design so that the iPad can wing around to face the customer allowing them to view the order, add personal information, and accomplish other tasks.

The iPad’s when not in use at the register can be quickly detached resulting in more free counter space for inventory or packing. The iPad register systems aren’t the only aspect of the redesigned checkout experience either. Urban Outfitters will eventually be equipping sales people with small iPod touch systems much like those implemented in Apple’s own mobile checkout solutions.

While Urban Outfitters new register will likely be a custom app, companies like Square offer smaller businesses the opportunity to dump traditional cash registers as well. Now only if NFC would actually evolve into something more than a pipe-dream.

I bet it will be pretty funny when people bring in their laptops and jailbreak these iPads when the sales assistant is looking the other way....

Or would this not be possible with the cases that they will most probably come in...
