Apple Unveils New Mapping Solution, Features 3D Maps, Crowd-Sourced Traffic Updates
Apple built an entirely new mapping solution from the ground up.
Apple’s new mapping application is a “worldwide effort” according to Tim Cook and includes more than 100 million business listing, turn-by-turn navigation, a 3D interface and Siri integration.
The turn-by-turn navigation features a real-time traffic service with information updated in real-time by other iOS users. Re-routing will be offered as a pop-up notification as well if users run into excessive slowdowns. Apple’s traffic service will alert drivers with red bars representing traffic slowdowns as well as icons to show construction, accidents and other traffic related happenings. The 3D maps are eerily similar to what Apple announced at their own even last week, complete with vector-based 3D graphics that appear when zoomed in far enough.
The information cards for businesses feature Yelp integration and ton of information for curious map goers. Users can ask siri to find a place to get gas, food, go to the restroom, etc and the maps application will find a place on the way without deviating from the current trip.
While Apple’s maps offering appears to be identical functionally to Google’s latest announcement, those watching the demo claim it looks “cleaner” and appears to operate “smoother.” However, the demo was run on an iPad and not an iPhone 4S. It’ll be interesting to see what the experience is like on older iPhones, or if they’ll even be compatible.

i had my expectations up to high. i was hoping for widgets and a new look to IOS itself. No need to rush for this upgrade. maps seems like the only reason to update

3GS gets iOS 6 but it looks like it lacks a lot of new features. No 3G FaceTime, turn by turn/3d nav... Time to upgrade my iPhone 4 to whatever iPhone comes out with ios 6 this fall!

"Some features may not be available in all countries or all areas. Flyover and turn-by-turn navigation will be available only on iPhone 4S and iPad 2 or later. Cellular data charges may apply." - Apples Website

IMHO iOS 6 sucks. Now it has couple features (new maps, Facebook integration, Siri), but in fact it will works very well in US. I don't know how it will work in Europe... I was waiting some awesome widgets, new design.... But now we have what have - iOS 5.2

Does anyone know if the bus routes will show up just like the Google Maps counterpart on iOS 5 and lower?
