Default Testing Reveals New iPad Runs 10 Degrees Hotter than iPad 2

There have been many observations and complaints of the new iPad running warmer than the previous generation which users have been posting about in the Apple Support Discussion forums.

The folks over at the Dutch site, Tweakers, performed a GLBenchmark test on the two generations of iPads for five minutes to measure the heat difference. The folks used an infrared camera to discover that the hottest part of the new iPad was 33.6 degrees Celsius (92.5 Fahrenheit), while the iPad 2 measured 28.3 degrees Celsius (83 Fahrenheit). Furthermore, they discovered the hottest point that was measured as well. The point seemed to be in the lower right corner, which some users had discovered by just using their iPad.

There seems to be a mixed response from end users regarding the issue as a whole with some claiming that they donít notice any extra warmth at all and others claiming their iPad gets too hot to handle. It seems that the culprit is the use of heavy GPU apps such as iOS games. Fortunately, the added heat doesnít seem to affect the functionality of the new iPad at all.

The issue certainly hasn't had any effect on the sales of the new iPad as Apple reportedly sold roughly three million iPads during launch weekend. Analysts continue to reevaluate their price target for the Cupertino California company as the sales numbers continue to outdo previous predictions.

How many hours (or minutes) of use til the iPads that are having the issue get that hot? I think it would be annoying. I know with my MBP it can start to get pretty hot after straight heavy use.

And why is this an issue? I swear people will find something to complain about. It's running faster and working harder a little extra heat is to be expected. Now get over it. #Next

Do the new iPads still have the issue with light seeping around the edges of the screen as many iPad 2s had?

I noticed this and I thought it was just me. I actually like this. I don't like holding a cold piece of metal. It's not overheating/burning (Thank God!) and I have no complaints.

That's the first thing I noticed working with my iPad on the first day. I quickly noticed the back was getting hot. Hopefully this wouldn't pose an issue in the future

What is it competed to the original? Or is it hard to tell considering the housing difference?
