iPad Slice of Tablet Market Share Grows to 80 Percent in North America

Apple’s market share in the tablet market continues to grow. Earlier this month the IDC estimated Apple’s iPad accounted for 68.3% of the worldwide tablet market, and a report today from Strategy Analytics pegs Apple’s North American market share at 80%.
According to the report the iPad accounted for six million of the 7.5 million total tablets shipped to the United States and Canada between April and July. The second quarter dominance has positioned Apple as a “formidable market leader.” This means the likes of Asus, Motorola, RIM, Samsung and HTC shipped roughly 1.5 million tablets combined in the same period. It appears there is a tablet market, but unfortunately for other manufacturers Apple has reached another iPod-like level of market dominance.
According to Strategy Analytics senior analyst Alex Spektor Amazon—who is supposed to announce their first tablet later this month—could be in the best position to take market share away from Apple.
"Provided the pricing, screen size and hardware design are right, Amazon can be one of the main challengers to Apple's dominance...Like Apple, Amazon has a strong brand, compelling content, sophisticated billing systems and widespread distribution," Spektor said.
Other tablet manufacturers rely on the Android Market Place and third-party content providers to supply users with games, music, movies and other forms of media content. Amazon, like Apple, has the unique position of already having a proprietary marketplace set up with a huge installed user base. Spektor is right, as long as Amazon can put together a halfway decent tablet experience they stand a good chance of making the biggest splash in the tablet market outside of Apple.

You're comparing data from two different statistics agencies, and making an assumption? That's a big no-no in the news world.

Fail article, you can't just compare "Worldwide" stats to "North America" stats and just assume the NA percentage grew to 80% and personally I thought iPad would have 86% of the NA share anyway.

Here's the missing source IDC: Apple iPad grabbed 68.3% worldwide market share in Q211 – MacDailyNews - Welcome Home
I agree. I HIGHLY doubt such a large increase would take part in a month with no new releases.Plus, comparing Worldwide to NA? Really?AND, the first two paragraphs are rubbish, and the rest is just minimally rephrased from the BBC source.Last edited by alien mars18; 09-27-2011 at 02:56 PM.
