Microsoft Windows 8 'Legitimately Threatens' iPad Dominance
The camps are once again at war. This week, following the official Windows 8 preview by Microsoft, Apple fanatics and Microsoft die-hards are squaring off in a heated new debate sparked by the plethora of tech reporters and industry analysts who see the Windows 8 operating system as the first "legitimate threat" to the iPad.
After Microsoft's previewed its coming operating system, Windows 8, on a prototype Samsung tablet at a conference in Anaheim, Calif., Tuesday, some tech-savvy observers reportedly called it the downfall of Apple's iPad.
In addition to the attributes of the operating system itself, major players in the PC and tablet realm are already hopping on the Windows 8 bandwagon. Just yesterday, we witnessed Dell and Samsung's enthusiastic plans to release tablets based on the new Windows 8 OS, although a release date for the OS hasn't yet been announced.
"Windows has long been the dominant computer operating system in the world," a report from the International Business Times reads, "though it missed a couple of beats, as consumers began turning to tablets and smartphones to work and socialize. With Windows 8, Microsoft has its eyes set on the tablet market and is aiming to regain the ground it has lost to Apple."
So, is this hype just another example of erroneous "iPad-killer" talk, or does Windows 8 pose a "legitimate threat" to Apple's tablet dominance?

There will never be a victor to the "my OS is better than yours" debate; it is a to each his own type of thing... But iOS is better! (just messin :P) I really don't understand why people get so upset when this debate comes about. It is almost like they personally had a hand in creating the OS, when they had nothing to do with it in reality. This stuff < logic.

We shall see... So far looks like hype. MS needs to rewrite the entire system and not create a spiderweb over 7 and call it 8! All in all it's great news for consumers. Hopefully MS lights some fire in innovation and we see some real good NEW tech devices as a result. I for one am sick of everyone trying to hang on the heals of Apl. Let's get some leaders with more and newer stuff!!!

The way I see it Microsoft "misses a beat" with every second release of Windows. Windows 3.1 was ok for it's time, 95 had issues, 98 was good, ME sucked, XP is still one of the best (but now outdated) operating systems of all time, Vista was a mistake, and 7 is acceptable.
Kinda reminds of the Star Trek movie franchise track record.

Every other week there's a new something which is going to be the iPhone/iPad killer. Never is though.
Can you remember the hype around the palm pre, the ultimate death of the iPhone? Lulz.

Very good point. I would say to all the haters on both sides (guess all sides with chrome coming) that the real winners are consumers ourselves. Competition from msft will only force apple to further innovate. Maybe msft is finally getting over itself and its "made men" (from an article on courier and android) and is finally getting out of cruise control. It is actually funny on one hand ballmer cries about the apple tax and how apple is able to achieve such high margins and at the same time steve jobs complains that msft has a price advantage as they have more suppliers (most likely complains for show). Hopefully in the future the apple tax will be gone and there will be credible products from multiple suppliers.....that way consumers like us will not get stuck in exclusive contract on overburdened networks that really don't work.

I didn't even waste my time reading the whole article. You can't compare a released O/S as in lion or IOs4 and 5 to one that is still in beta. That makes no sense. By the time this OS is released we will be so close to iO/S 6 any comparisons made now will again be pointless.
Report news not junk.

I think it's talk, Windows works on a desktop (barely), but it is way too bloated to ever run efficiently on a tablet.I mean the Windows 8 download is in the GB range, it needs to be under 1GB for a tablet and that's after installation.

I hope Microsoft does have a revolutionary release. This will only increase competition and will result in better tech eventually! I am looking foreword to this release.. I'll put it on my Mac with parallels
