iPad 2 Demand Pushes 2011 IDC Tablet Shipping Estimates Even Higher
With the iPad 2 serving as the primary underlying basis for the hike, the International Data Corporation (IDC) has elevated its global tablet shipment outlook (from 50.4 units to 53.5 million units) even though 1st quarter shipments were less than record-breaking.
The prominent research firm says worldwide media tablet shipments into sales channels fell by 28% on a sequential basis in the first calendar quarter of 2011 to 7.2 million units worldwide. This data was gleaned from the IDC Worldwide Quarterly Media Tablet and eReader Tracker.
"Like the PC market, Media Tablets had a bit of a challenging quarter in Q1, as concerns about general macroeconomic issues and the post-holiday letdown took a toll on demand," said Bob O'Donnell, IDC Vice President, Clients and Displays. "We expect the rest of the year to be much stronger, but we believe vendors who continue to focus on the telco channel for distribution will face serious challenges."
Illustrating how Apple may share a similar optimistic outlook on the future of iPad 2 sales this year, MMi reported last week that Apple has finally bolstered its product inventory to the most plentiful degree to date. iPad 2 inventories are now such that online orders (through Apple) for the second generation tablet reveal a brisk 3-5 business day shipping estimate - the fasted to date for Apple with regard to this particular product.
