Default Hulu Agrees to Play Nice with Apple's New Subscription Rules

It's all sunshine and rainbows between Apple and the folks at Hulu this Monday morning. As it turns out, the Hulu Plus application has been updated to fully comply with Apple's recently revamped In-App Subscription rules. Fortunately for Hulu, the update was about as simple as it could be.

As reported this morning by our friends at All Thing Digital, Hulu simply had to pull the plug on the link that sent potential subscribers to its Web site. Why? Apple’s new rules effectively prohibit “apps that link to external mechanisms for purchases or subscriptions to be used in the app.”

Of course, there are some drawbacks from Hulu's perspective, writes Peter Kafka of All Things Digital. "That means that the app can no longer function as an effective advertising tool for the video service, which is a bummer for Hulu (which is owned by Comcast’s NBC, Disney’s ABC and News Corp.’s Fox; News Corp. also owns this Web site). It’d be quite useful to offer a smattering of free content on the app, then encourage users who want more stuff to click through to Hulu.com to pony up $8 a month."

If Hulu had proceeded with allowing potential subscribers to sign up through App Store interface, the company would have no choice but to share a chunk of the revenue - 30% - with Apple. Although the new arrangement isn't most convenient for prospective subscribers on the iPad, Hulu is emphasizing that users can still easily sign up for the service on the iPhone or iPad Mobile Safari browser. Their username and password can then promptly be entered into the official Hulu Plus application for immediate access.

If the owner of this site reads this: The new site has one bug that I can not stand... The "Read More" button will not load 3/4th's of the time.

You may want to post in a relevant section of the forum such as Site Feedback or the thread about the new site launch... might get more attention than in the Hulu thread... just sayin.

I ordered a piz from the Pizza Hut app on Sunday. There was no CC on file. I was able to enter my CC details and place the order. Was Apple cheated out of their 30%?
