New Evidence in iOS 5 Beta Suggest High Res Screen for iPad 3
When Apple released the iPad 2 back in March, many people were hoping that it would include a new high resolution Retina display similar to the one found on the iPhone 4. Unfortunately, this did not turn out to be the case and it retained the same screen as the first generation iPad. New evidence discovered in the latest beta version of iOS 5 now suggests that the iPad 3 is about to get a new and improved screen with a considerably higher resolution.
According to reports, images found within the Twitter.framework files appear to be larger than usual and have resolutions of 2048x1536, instead of the usual 1024x768. So far this is the only occurrence of large resolution files appearing in the beta version of iOS 5. With iOS 5, Twitter is being integrated across the entire operating for the first time.
While the first and second-generation iPad both have a screen resolution of just 1024x768, the iPad 3ís display is expected to double to 2048x1536. This will quadruple the total number of pixel onscreen giving it a pixel density of 264ppi, far short of the required 300ppi to be called a Retina display. Still, this will be quite an improvement over the current 132ppi on the current model.
Another report states that the iPad 3 will likely go on sale in the fourth quarter of this year, and have an "image resolution 5-6 times higher than iPad 2." If this rumor turns out to be true, then the iPad 3 will be out just in time for Christmas.
Itís widely believed that Apple chose not to include a higher resolution screen when they released the iPad 2 due to "engineering issues." These issues have likely been overcome by now, paving the way for a much improved screen when the iPad 3 comes out in the future.

Is it just me, or does Apple seem to release an iPad every couple of months?

Didn't they say the same thing about the iPad 2? I don't believe Apple is going to release a new iPad this year..... Just my opinion......

Thankfully, my iPad 2 will still be worth around $400 I hope. Not too bad to make the jump. Depends on what else they upgrade. The screen alone isn't worth it to me personally.

Geeeesh! Can they give us some time to play with our iPad 2s before they go up and sell another one? I feel like they are releasing these things way too quickly.

There's no way Apple releases another iPad this year.. They've never in their history released 2 versions of the same product before a 12 month cycle. Secondly if they release the iPad and the iPhone in the same quarter then customers who are strapped for cash will have to choose between one or the other. Having them spaced out lets the average consumer save up for each product 3 - 4 months apart.
It makes sense that the iPad 3 would be in testing phase right now and in spring 2012 iOS5 will still be the current OS so I don't see this as evidence of them pushing up the next launch.

The comment about iPad 3 being released later this year: That's just silly. Who could possibly take that seriously?

LOL releasing 2 different generations of the iPad in the same year really? Not.
They are having such a good time selling the iPad 2 right now that you still cant find them anywhere on the shelf! Trust me they will eat that up as far as it will go. Count on iPad 3 next year.

nice find Wiley! I too think that this may be a smaller model iPad because like the dude before me said, it would eat into the iPad2 sales way too much. Plus it would be much easier to make a higher resolution screen on a smaller device(obviously). Anyway good for Apple for going after the Galaxy Tab/Xoom market with both iPads

Apple is going to start releasing all the iOS devices at the same time, Fall, from here on out. For the people complaining that Apple won't release the iPad 3 this year again... Did you really believe Apple would rerelease the same iPhone 4 (CDMA antanna) 6+ months after instead waiting for the yearly refresh that should have been a couple months away? Apple screwed a lot the early adaptors the looked forwarded to a yearly refresh. Now we have to purchase the extra year of protection. When will you people get it through your head, Apple is just a business looking to make profit! And if you don't have stock there's no benefit from worshiping Apple; heck not evening a rewards program that can get you a discounts on your next device!

Releasing all iOS devices at the same time each year doesn't make much financial (common) sense. I'm no analyst or anything but it seems pretty obvious that they would sell more of each device if they staggered the release of each device within each year.
