Default Report: iPad 2, Smart Covers Coming to Toys R' Us Tomorrow

On April 6th, MMi broke the news that Toys R' Us officials were planning to launch the iPad 2 at the venerable children's toy retailer in the near future. A Toys R' Us employee provided us with exclusive photographic evidence suggesting that the tablet was about to become a toy, so to speak, as Toys R' Us had begun prepping sales staff for the hot product arrival.

This weekend, more evidence surfaced of a looming iPad 2 launch at select Toys R' Us locations. Based on supplemental information provided by yet another Toys R' Us employee to our friends at 9 to 5 Mac, smart covers and the iPad 2 itself will become available at Toys R' Us, beginning tomorrow, Sunday April 17th.

According to an employee obtained memo, Toys Rí Us will carry the 16 GB and 32 GB WiFi-only iPad 2 at price points of $499 and $599, respectively. At this time, it doesn't appear that Toys R' Us will make the second generation Apple tablet available for purchase via the Toys R' Us website.

In addition to the iPad 2 being available at Apple, AT&T, Verizon, Samís Club, Radio Shack, Target, and Walmart, Toys R' Us will be joined by Best Buy tomorrow is rolling out a special iPad 2 promotion. The details? For now, they aren't known. But speculation suggests that every Best Buy will have at least three iPad 2's in stock with the likely prospect of bundled accessory packages.

I was totally pleased before I heard this. Can anyone, honestly, justify why a child (someone under 13) needs a $500+ peace of technology? I doubt if many adults will be going to a toy store to buy themselves an iPad.

I bought an iPad 1 for my 5 year old and and an iPhone 4 from CL for my 2 year old. They love apple products. Children love iPads and iPhone/touch's. It's so much more interactive than a normal game or book or whatever. I think it's a good thing.
But I also bought it so they would keep away from my iPad 2 and iPhone... Of course it doesn't always work as my 2 year old seems to snag my iPad any chance he gets. ^^

I'm sticking with my original quote. Who cares just buy one if you want one already, and if they are sold out everywhere else in your city except Toys R Us well....

No I strongly believe a kid should not have a phone till 13ish and then it should be a POS not an iPhone! I see kids in 5th and 6th grade running around with iPhones! I'm 17 and my parents refuse to buy me an iPhone (I'm getting ready to buy It myself though hahaha) and at that I also have to pay for my text and data (they comp the talk, insert sarcasm here)

Not saying you're a bad parent, as that's a pretty terrible thing to do, but isn't it kind of spoiling your kids buy giving them a very expensive iDevice that is more than likely going to be broken? then another one will be bought for them showing that they can be destructive and have no consequences? I'd understand if when they break the iDevice it's gone, that's good that they see there is a consequence for destroying their property (or whatever you want to call it). Again, not accusing you of bad parenting, just wanting a different viewpoint than mine.
    (yay opinion sharing!)
(and I say I'm not accusing you of bad parenting twice because a lot of people just take offense when you say stuff like what I just did because they see it as a personal insult)(and I'm typing way too much because I'm nervous thy you might get pissed and flame all over me *sigh)

My son was 2 years and a couple months when the first iPad was released. I bought one and within a few days I could see how powerful of a learning device it was. There is so many good educational apps. I ended up buying him his own iPad a few weeks later. After a few months of having an iPad, I went ahead and got him an iPod Touch so he would have something more portable when traveling to grandparents house and such. He also loved using facetime to call me or my wife at work. He is almost three now and has had both of the devices for quite awhile. They are both in great shape and I have not had any issues with him and an iDevice.

I kind of have the reverse opinion of yours and I feel that its bad parenting for not giving your child every learning opportunity and not teaching them responsibility at a young age.

And before I get flamed, my son is not glued to the devices 24/7. Honestly he spends more time outside and reading books. However, when he does pick up the device, I have some great educational apps installed for him. Compared to his friends and cousins that are his same age, he destroys them on problem solving, math, and spelling. He also is getting damn good at telling time from this last app that I bought him.

To me its worth the investment.
