Today, I waited in line, on launch day for an Apple product for the first time. I'm sure many readers have done such a thing before, but this was my first experience, and I thought it might be interesting to share some of the more exciting moments from my day in line for the iPad 2.
I decided to get the iPad at the Apple Store in SoHo, NYC. It's a flagship store, but isn't as insane as some of the other NYC locations (No one sold their spot for 900$) My friend William and I arrived just after 6 AM, just after the heavy rain showers had passed over the city, and found ourselves with only ten people in front of us. Our was to be about eleven hours.
I spent the day with some extremely interesting characters. The first: a man, missing many teeth, in a ragged pin-stripe suit (with matching fedora), who we realized later was selling spots in front of him (likely via craigslist). Nonetheless, when not on the phone lining up potential 'clients,' he pranced around exclaiming his excitement, while never seeming to know too much about the product he was waiting for. He ended the evening in a triumphant and impromptu vomit into the corner trashcan.
The next, a young artist, who arrived shortly after us, who set up an easel, propped up his iPad, and began painting the scene on the iPad. He drew some of the biggest crowds of the day. Here's his work in progress:
As 3:30 approached, we realized that we certainly were not tenth in line at all. We had suddenly slipped to about thirtieth. The few people in line had snuck "family members" in front of us while Apple employees were busy remaking the store for the launch. When employees re-appeared, it was too late. We were informed that what often happens at product launches is that "non end-users" (or resellers) use each other to secure as many products as possible, and of course the iPad 2 was no exception.
Nonetheless, we were escorted in at 5 PM, and a sea of blue-shirted employees greeted us with cheers and blasting music, and I was out of the store by 5:15 with my new iPad (White 32 GB 3G AT&T). The experience was overall a great one, particularly because it ended up being a beautiful day in Manhattan, and the characters only added to the excitement of purchasing Apple's latest and greatest.
I write this only to give readers an idea of some of the more interesting aspects of product launch day's at Apple retail stores. And in case any of you are wondering how I like the new iPad? In a word: awesome.
Happy iPad 2 launch everyone! Here's some more pics from the launch:

I waited for 28 minutes. And that's just because I showed up 20 minutes early. Thank you target.

I went to best buy. A line of about 60 people lined the outside of the store as they started passing out tickets to secure people's purchase. I decided to head over to target, in the same shopping center about 5 stores down... No line at all. In fact they only had 5 to sell there but I walked in and got one. So I have a black 64GB iPad 2 now. Guess people didn't know target carried them on launch day.iRealSMS - your REAL native landscape SMS app on the iPhone

I got to best buy about 3:30 and didn't leave until 6:00. There were about 30 to 40 people in front of me. I don't think BB handled it all that well and for the first 20 minutes they had 1 register for this for this. So with a 200 person line or so they finally opened up a few more registers. If they would have had 4 to 5 registers open right away it wouldn't have been so bad. I'm betting the people at the end didn't get out of there until 8 or so.

Maybe I missed the "exciting" and "interesting" parts of that story? But I will say this; If I ever need to wait in line, I hope you're in it, so I can cut infront so easily.

I waited 5 hours ugh. Dont think I'll do that again. Especially since our mall cops wouldn't even let people sit on the floor

I waited at pre-order launch for the iPhone 4 at the AT&T store in my mall which took about 30 min. So this was kind of my 2nd launch event.
Got to Best Buy at 4:15 or so, took about an hour and a half with about 60 people ahead of me. The 3G 64GB's apparently sold out the quickest, which was apparently a shock to the employees who stated the WiFi 32GBs were usually sold out first.
There is an Apple store 5 minutes away from this Best Buy, I heard the line wrapped all the way around the building._____________________________________________

I called a couple Best Buy stores after I got off of work around 5:30 and they were both already sold out. I didn't ask the first one, but the 2nd store I called only had about 15 of them so its no wonder they sold out so fast! I'd try Target or Walmart but I want to use my $250 worth of BB gift cards to buy it!

8 hours in line at Arden Fair Mall Apple Store Sacramento Ca for my Sexy Super fast White 64GB iPad 2 3G, idk the experience wasn't the same as my 3GS iPhone 4 or my first iPad 3G 64GB I stood in line for on launch day every time. Though the quality of apple products are amazing wouldn't want to stand in line for anything else. But I'll see you again when they Launch the next iPhone oh I'm loving my new iPad 2.

I waited at Walmart for an hour, I was 1st in line. But It was a good experience. Funny thing was one of the employees was complaining to another that he was sick of all the people coming in asking questions about the new iPad. Wasn't able to get the white 16gb so I got the black. Damn I really wanted the white oh well. Sad thing is I still haven't even opened because I'm moving stuff in to my new home. Lol
