Rumor Watch: iPad 2 Carbon Fiber Body Suspected But Not Confirmed
A runaway rumor being taken as reality by some today is that the iPad 2 will sport a carbon fiber body shell instead of an aluminum encasing in an effort by Apple to make the tablet lighter and sleeker. But as John Gruber of Daring Fireball cautions, there is no concrete evidence to chalk this feature up as a given in the same way we can assuredly expect a front-facing camera for FaceTime chats on the 2nd-gen iPad.
John Gruber only mentioned in a footnote - yes, in a footnote - that he is “half-sure” about the iPad 2 getting a carbon fiber shell, a persistent suspicion that has lingered practically since the iPad was released one year ago. The actual blog post that started the carbon fiber discussion wasn't even about the removal of the iPad's aluminum shell. Rather, Gruber was aiming to address Engadget's report about there being no retina display on the iPad 2.
In speaking one set of iPad 2 rumors, it appears that another sprouted new legs. But as my MMi colleague Matt Savoca noted in his interesting iPad 2 rumor roundup last night, we're only one week away from being able to reconcile the rumors surrounding the iPad 2 with the actual reality of the tablet's refreshed features. Then, hopefully, we may all get a few days of respite before the iPad 3 speculation can begin in earnest

All theses rumors... Make me think that when the iPad 2 comes out half the suspected features won't even be on it. Time will tell. And Steve Jobs said "Let there be light... and lets put that into an app also"

What's next? Bulletproof glass? - or has that already been a rumor too....Uh yep I believe it has.

How does half sure really mean anything in the end? That's a probability of 100% to being right. It's like saying "I'm half sure that if I flip a penny it will land heads."

If he is only half sure then he is really saying he has no fusking clue. Even 99% sure is the same because there is a 50% chance you will get that 1% which makes the entire 99% pointless. In the end, either it will be carbon fiber or won't, and no amount of percentages will make it any more or less true. It's all just fusking speculation.

Makes sense. It's definitely a design that would make the iPad a little sexier! And with talks of a lighter iPad.... It would be a win, win for everybody ;-P

It will not have a carbon fiber body not even one that looks like carbon fiber. It would not make sense for apple or it's consumers. Just my two cents

I'd prefer liquid metal

I agree, I am expecting the first gen., with a camera, slight body change, (to be slimmer) and a faster processor. All in all, similiar to what they did with iPhone, 3G to 3GS

Michael Essany is the king of writing news story about nothing. He can take one sentence and stretch it amongst paragraph after paragraph...it's a true art.

If they made it real carbon fiber the price would go through the roof. Most all the articles on this site are pure speculation. They love to spread the rumors!
