Apple to Use Super-PLS LCDs in Future iPads?
The Korea Herald is reporting that Samsung is in talks with Apple to supply Super-PLS displays for the iPad. Samsung's patented technology, which it previewed last November, allows brighter screens at lower cost. However, mass production has not yet begun on S-PLS screens, raising questions about whether these displays would be for the iPad 2 or a future model.
Samsung's Mobile Display division says that their Super-PLS (Plane-to-Line Switching) technology offers a number of improvements to the IPS (In-Plane Switching) displays used on the current iPad. For instance, they claim that S-PLS offers 100% better viewing angles with S-PLS over today’s IPS technology. Given that the iPad has a viewing angle of 178 degrees, it's hard to know what that could mean, but presumably it refers to improved graphics quality at lower angles. Additionally, they claim S-PLS will be 10% brighter than current IPS displays, with 15% lower production costs.
Though the Herald article mentions the iPad 2, that model is reportedly in production now. So any talks for future supplies would have to be be about a future generation of the device, which the Herald says "is expected to be released later this year." It's interesting, given that S-PLS also offers Wide XGA graphics resolution. What this might mean in terms of an iPad was not detailed in the report, but the fact that these LCDs can support a display resolution of 1280 x 800 in the 4:3 aspect ratio of the current iPad, or up to 1366 x 768 in cinema 16:9 mode, could potentially suggest a higher-resolution or even widescreen iPad in the future. Is this display possibly intended for the mythical iPad 3?

60% of iphone, ipad and ipod components are made by Samsung.

Anyway, you'll find this kind of thing all over the electronics world, it's nothing new. I doubt HP makes the screws, wire, chips, bulbs, or glass for it's "HP" monitors... They contract the small stuff out, so they can focus on design, distribution, marketing, and assembly.

Is there really a need for better viewing angle technology? Does anyone look at any display at more than a 45 degree angle?
I for one, don't want everyone on a train, bus, plane, anywhere, to be able to clearly see the screen of my iPhone.

For something like the iPad, I don't see what the point of touting better viewing angles is. Are there people that are viewing the ipad at much of an angle at all? Seriously. We aren't talking about a wall mounted television that people are viewing from different areas of the room.

I once prayed to God for an iPhone, but quickly found out He didn't work that way...so I stole an iPhone and prayed for His forgiveness.

I don't see the point of S-PLS LCD's. I wonder if Apple's even considered QLED for their displays in the future? They may just stick with what they have though.

Just let LCD die!!! If PSP NGP is going to have an 5" OLED screen at an "affordable" price, the iPad at its expensive price should have an 10" OLED screen.
If they insist on using LCD, they could at least go to SLCD from Sony, Sony SLCD is the best LCD I've ever seen, pretty good blacks and a higher contrast ratio than this IPS old tech Apple insist on using.
I don't believe in Apple rumours unless its a leak like iPhone 4, Xperia Play etc
I hope at least the iPhone 5 has a OLED screen.

i do think that the viewing angle is for when your seating at a table and the ipad is flat on it. your not really straigh down on it depending on the height difference in the chair to table. better graphic this way would be great. but i really think that ipad need a lot more RAM. im always running low on memory and having apps crashYou don't like the iPad because you don't have one!

OLED tech is too expensive to produce in mass for tablets. Right now the best bang for the buck is LCD-based technology, and as such that's what I'd like to see improved on until better tech comes along at a reasonable price point. Heck, even Samsung isn't putting OLED screens on their forthcoming tablets, so how on Earth could Apple? They can have my jailbreak when they pry it from my cold dead fingers.
