02-01-2011, 09:46 AM #1Apple Blocks Sony Reader App, Could Have Even Worse Implications
According to several reports, Apple has denied Sony from releasing its Sony Reader App on the App Store, the reason: e-book purchases must go through Apple. This move goes completely against the recent wave of leniency that has allowed many previously denied apps back into the app store, but news of this rejection could mean very bad things for what I believe is one of iOS's, and particularly the iPad's, strengths.
The New York Times reports that according to Steve Haber, the president of Sony's digital reading division, Sony's app was denied solely because it would allow users to download e-books from the Sony Reader Store, not Apple's iBooks. There's word that the true reason the app was rejected was the means that Sony's app allowed purchases of it's e-books, but it seems unclear whether other popular e-reader apps such as the Kindle or Nook apps, could be affected if Apple maintains this policy.
The iPad is one of the strongest, if not the strongest choice of a digital reader for those who want to get their e-books from anywhere possible. With iOS versions of Amazon Kindle Books, Barnes and Noble Nook Books, and Apple's own iBooks App, users have a variety of places to find their digital books and can read them on one singular device. This 'openness' in my opinion, makes up for the slightly-less-than-perfect screen for reading in the sun. If Sony's app was truly denied because of Apple's plan to crack down on 3rd party e-book apps, it would be a very disappointing decision, and would erase one of the iPad's best assets.
The iPhone or iPod touch versions of these apps, also important for company's such as Amazon and Barnes and Noble to allow the enjoying of purchased content on as many devices as possible, would also be affected. The smaller screen size makes digital reading less than ideal, but as a student who uses the Kindle app on my iPhone all the time, a possible removal of these apps seems highly detrimental for all iOS devices, not just the iPad.
We'll keep you updated if there's any more news regarding this possible policy change for the iOS app store.

But I don't see why it was blocked, I use the Kindle app on my iPad all the time seeing as how the iBookstore doesn't have a ton of books on it that I'm looking for. Isn't the Kindle app the same basically...

That's why Apple blows. I had a sony reader three years before the ipad came out. I have so many books from sony that i can't even use. Thanks again Steve blow Jobs. I guess Steve is having another acid trip flashback and isn't thinking rationally. Its time for someone else to knock him off his high horse.

Please don't take my kindle! I have a ton of other 3rd party book and comic apps too and hope this is not a sign of things to come.

Sony doesn't support jailbreaking (especially in the recent restraining order of GeoHot), but it would be an option to release the app in Cydia. Never would happen but a thought.

Why would they deny Sony Reader when they allow Kindle?
Kindle has cheaper books, and I can read them on my Mac as well as my iPod Touch.
Here's to hoping they don't stop supporting the Kindle app.

You don't like the iPad because you don't have one!
